A very mixed bag, Now 49 - for every Destiny's Child making a (somewhat delayed) bow in a Now poll, there's a Dido. For every Mis-Teeq, a Marti Pellow. A number of strong candidates should make for an intriguing poll.

The last Now poll was the closest for AGES, with Gorillaz finally beating Shaggy and Nelly F by one vote - "Clint Eastwood" is the lowest-rated winner ever, which makes up slightly for it being the first one I don't actually like.

THE TICKNESS

That's kind of passed now though. Plus Speakerboxxx and a lot of their other material doesn't sound like any of the undie rubbish that is mostly listened to by people who don't listen to mainstream hip hop - it sounds like mainstream hip hop, 'cos it is. The Love Below is different because large chunks of it aren't hop hop at all, QED. Outkast even started an album with a track called 'Gangsta Shit'!

But of course the actual content of the music that gets picked to be the acceptable face of hip hop by the Guardian or whoever never stands up to that kind of scrutiny - the Guardian etc. loves Missy, for example, and is always trying to make her seem to be 'better' (morally) than those other hip hop and r&b people.

The point is, you might as well complain about Missy's rep.

it's interesting tho because i don't think anyone complained when De La Soul did 'hippy shit' on their first album. maybe some quarters (West Coast gangsta lovers?) did?

i suppose the difference is that Trugoy didn't pose as a CENTAUR for the CD inlay!

but, that's just a bit of fun surely? i think people, from all sides, have funny ideas about what rappers should and shouldn't do in this regard.

There was a lot of "De La is gay" stuff in the rap press at the time, claims that they were Uncle Toms and the like... mainly from white writers, to be honest.
