What was the first Britpop record?

Yes, first band is probably The Kinks.

Last band is sadly probably Dirty Pretty Things, as the zombie corpse shuffles on.

Harris says "I really really fancy Justine from Elastic", essentially, repeatedly. He's not wrong, bless 'im.

I think he says the first one was a Blur record. I'll look at it again tonight.

Nah, Suede were getting hype of a very different sort immediately before the Big Push started. They never really fitted in with Britpop until they returned without Bernie B.

A starter for 10 (ie thrown in for debate purposes, not saying I'm right) on 'the first':

"For Tomorrow" by Blur.

I used to be a pure pop gal back in 1994 or whenever it was. One day I was in the Tammy Girl changing rooms and Blur's Girls And Boys came on the store radio- for me it was the first Britpop song, and it changed my life for evaaaaar. Though I am sure this is peak Britpop to the better educated.

Music stopped being FUN and started being SERIOUS. NB this coincided with my GOTH phase.

I mean *guitar* music stopped being fun

Possibly cos we had Spice Girls & co to give us different sort of BritPOP with the emphasis on HAVIN A LARF.

perhaps OK Computer DID do more damage to Britpop than the self-inflicted harm of Urban Hymans after all. But i lump Urban Hymns in with Diana Death and always see that as the true sign of the 'scene' death. hum.
