Blur's 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' singles did spring to mind the quickest here too.
But there's that artskool side of things too which seemed to be there at the inception of what is known as Britpop but was quickly crushed underfoot by laddism etc.
- Suede (circa first album) - Blur (circa Modern Life is Rubbish) - Saint Etienne (circa So Tough) - Denim (circa Back In Denim) - The Auteurs!! (circa "Lenny Valentino") - CARL FROM CUD! picking his favourite British records!!
weird thing about St Et. at the time was i disliked He's On The Phone almost as much as 'Sylvie' etc. - indie-poppers falling between two stools (i like HOTP now tho).
I think St Et. never really escaped the 'Indiepop' label and it set them out from Britpop enough. HOTP being Purepop prob. helped there massively too.
One of the things I did pick up from the Harris book of evil was how London-centric Britpop was, which I didn't realise at the time. Yet Britpop Mk II is determinedly provincial => I think this makes it even worse.
I have one Auteurs album and I like it quite a bit! It is called How I Learned To Love The Bootboys. I got into them because of Black Box Recorder who are ACE and POP, The Auteurs are nowhere near as good as BBR.
