See, I loved My Life Story at the time! They had lots of violins! Cor, what is this new and exciting take on britpop! And they wore shiny shirts, which I believe was considered to be some kind of statement to image obsessed yoof! I bought their singles, oh yes, I even taped the alBUM of a friend, but in my later years I simply must ask myself how I could EVER have approved of a band who flaut the "virtues" of a gurlie who "leaves the pie, but always, always, eats her greens"? JAKE SHILLINGFORD with your STUPID CURL, I denounce you! Anyway, back we are in September '96, with a STUNNING selection of also-rans at the bottom of the selection (Bawl, anyone? Ruth?), ON AND ON by the Longpigs, and of course the obligatory Cranberries track. Don your Addidas trackie tops/Man City footie shirts and VOTE!

I BOUGHT Rocket From The Crypt on CD, only to find it was CD3 and contained a rub live version. So I took it back to Our Price to swap it. But by then I'd gotten sick of the song, and swapped it for.....

... Marblehead Johnson by the Bluetones!

Soooo hard to choose between two of my favourite records of the 90s... Rocket From The Crypt versus Sleeper. Goddammit... even that Longpigs track would probably have been my favourite on most of the other Shine compilations, and that's not even in the top 2 here.

Oh, why are people voting for Dodgy? That song was the bane of my life, bane of my life, d'you hear? Otherwise splendid nostalgia collection here.

I remember feeling really annoyed when [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger and [livejournal.com profile] thebopkids conspired shamelessly to get Punka "out of the way early" in the FT best singles ever poll. Fortunately publication of the poll died out before the tragically low position could be revealed.

Bawl = the remnants of Puppy Love Bomb (I think) who ran a caff just up from college, and had a t-shirt that said "Dublin is Dead" in the middle and lots of bands from beyond the pale (obv excluding The Pale) around the outside, which as you might imagine got them some press.

I still have Beyond Safe Ways, it's quite good.

One of the worst memories I have in my life is taking my sister to the Weller concert around the time "Peacock Suit" was out (she cannot drive and had no other way to get to the venue). All through the concert there was this 50ish yuppie couple that were getting it on to the music. Damn this Shine compo for bringing it all back.
