See, I loved My Life Story at the time! They had lots of violins! Cor, what is this new and exciting take on britpop! And they wore shiny shirts, which I believe was considered to be some kind of statement to image obsessed yoof! I bought their singles, oh yes, I even taped the alBUM of a friend, but in my later years I simply must ask myself how I could EVER have approved of a band who flaut the "virtues" of a gurlie who "leaves the pie, but always, always, eats her greens"? JAKE SHILLINGFORD with your STUPID CURL, I denounce you! Anyway, back we are in September '96, with a STUNNING selection of also-rans at the bottom of the selection (Bawl, anyone? Ruth?), ON AND ON by the Longpigs, and of course the obligatory Cranberries track. Don your Addidas trackie tops/Man City footie shirts and VOTE!

I ticked it! This Shine is my Dadrock moment, as I really like "One To Another", more than anything the Charlatans ever did before or since.

It is better than anything else they did - there were lots of crazy rumours at the time that the album was going to be entirely produced by the Chemical Brothers, and it was the period when they were going on about the Wu-Tang Clan in interviews before the vast majority of their fans knew who that was.

didn't every single NME band harp on about how great the Wu were round this time tho? inc. Paul Heaton, Texas and Ians Broudie and Brown.

Well, with the compression of time with hindsight it might look that way, but as I remember it Tim Burgess got there first. For whatever that's worth, i.e. not a lot anymore.

Also I think we are getting dangerously close to regarding tracks like this as 'Guilty Pleasures' - no guilt, please!

Ooh, this is the thing that poptimists vs rockists article was banging on about- how poptismism is simply in danger of creating a new canon of cool and corresponding dungeon of verbotens.

The thing is I kind of do feel guilty - or rather conflicted - about liking the Manics! My objection to "guilty pleasures" isn't NO GUILT EVER NO NO but that it's a glib way to mask and not talk about more interesting reactions.

Is the conflict between you and your younger self? Or is it an 'omg they are rub, but the chorus of Design For Life is dead catchy' thing?

Personally, I can't stand them, but you knew that already.

The chorus of ADFL is dead hamfisted so it isn't the latter.

It's a bit to do with the 'resentment of rock' stuff I talked about in yesterday's Popular entry.

I wouldn't describe The Charlies track is a guilty pleasure and nor do I feel guilty for liking it. But liking that track does sort of annoy me cos it means I can't simply write them off as a bunch of hammond obsessed tw4ts.
