See, I loved My Life Story at the time! They had lots of violins! Cor, what is this new and exciting take on britpop! And they wore shiny shirts, which I believe was considered to be some kind of statement to image obsessed yoof! I bought their singles, oh yes, I even taped the alBUM of a friend, but in my later years I simply must ask myself how I could EVER have approved of a band who flaut the "virtues" of a gurlie who "leaves the pie, but always, always, eats her greens"? JAKE SHILLINGFORD with your STUPID CURL, I denounce you! Anyway, back we are in September '96, with a STUNNING selection of also-rans at the bottom of the selection (Bawl, anyone? Ruth?), ON AND ON by the Longpigs, and of course the obligatory Cranberries track. Don your Addidas trackie tops/Man City footie shirts and VOTE!

I BOUGHT Rocket From The Crypt on CD, only to find it was CD3 and contained a rub live version. So I took it back to Our Price to swap it. But by then I'd gotten sick of the song, and swapped it for.....

... Marblehead Johnson by the Bluetones!

It's interesting how they've outlasted so many other, maler bands in people's hearts. As have Elastica. Coinkydink?

Yes. I never really understood why she made a solo album when it sounds exactly like St Etienne anyway only more tweer and duller (but still OK in places).

I ticked it! This Shine is my Dadrock moment, as I really like "One To Another", more than anything the Charlatans ever did before or since.

It's a cover of the Jane Weidlin soft rock classic ("ooh you send me!") - they were very much a one-hit wonder despite often coming back on the Evening Sesh to tell LaMac about how they weren't a one-hit wonder.

It goes

"I don't want your [something]
I don't want your [something else]
I don't want your [something else again]
eh-eh-ny-moooore"

I think it ruined St Et for me as it was the point at which I twigged how crappy her voice was.

WHERE IS SPEEDY BAND?

BLASPHEM- oh I dunno. If we start engaging our critical faculties when talking about Manics records pre-These Are My Pants, Show Me Yours, where will it end?

Soooo hard to choose between two of my favourite records of the 90s... Rocket From The Crypt versus Sleeper. Goddammit... even that Longpigs track would probably have been my favourite on most of the other Shine compilations, and that's not even in the top 2 here.

Funnily enough, I bought the Bluetones album containing 'Marblehead Johnson' (I forget the name), and then realised it was a pile of poo so I took it back to Our Price to swap it and shout at the Sales Assistants for not warning me of its innate rubbishness.
