See, I loved My Life Story at the time! They had lots of violins! Cor, what is this new and exciting take on britpop! And they wore shiny shirts, which I believe was considered to be some kind of statement to image obsessed yoof! I bought their singles, oh yes, I even taped the alBUM of a friend, but in my later years I simply must ask myself how I could EVER have approved of a band who flaut the "virtues" of a gurlie who "leaves the pie, but always, always, eats her greens"? JAKE SHILLINGFORD with your STUPID CURL, I denounce you! Anyway, back we are in September '96, with a STUNNING selection of also-rans at the bottom of the selection (Bawl, anyone? Ruth?), ON AND ON by the Longpigs, and of course the obligatory Cranberries track. Don your Addidas trackie tops/Man City footie shirts and VOTE!

Well there were MANY MANY more rubbish male bands than female bands at the time, so more to forget - I am not sure there's that much in it apart from the usual boring indieofthattime=lotsofboys things.

"Interestingly", ho ho, I remember My Life Story with the violins and the image and so on to be very much on the hard sell to the ladies, and looking back it seemed quite obligating which I don't like. Just another way to tell GURLS wot they are SPOSED TO LIKE, as long as it is rly by MENG!111!!

according to a friend of mine who really liked MLS, jake shillingford was once interviewed in just 17 or some such mag teaching girls how to put eyeliner on? (since i steered clear of girls' mags at the time i've no clue how true this is.) I liked 12 reasons why a lot, none of their other songs really clicked though.

I'm not sure poptimists is such a representative sample, it seems like mainstream britpop nostalgia still sidelines the fvck out of the mostly-female bands. The elastica-and-kenickie bias seems more a case of 'reject britpop (mostly in hyperbole?) BUT the girls were good,' dunnit?
