The History Of Pop Part 31 aka A man that's on the run is a dirty son of a gun

Now 31 takes us to the (current) halfway point! in the Now polls, and finds Britpop in 'full swing', backed up with a host of fondly and less fondly remembered tracks. DJ Daz should take note of Love City Groove, unfortunate pioneers in the 'put some rap in Eurovision' category. Reeves and Mortimer cover the Monkees, Duran Duran cover the Furious Five, Shaggy tackles Mungo Jerry, Baby D take on the Korgis and Ladysmith Black Mambazo surely fulfil a lifetime ambition by getting to work with China Black.

You'll also get to vote in the Now 30 face-off - Portishead and Massive Attack share the spoils with East 17's "Stay Another Day" a mere two votes behind. Bucketheads in 4th, Boos in 5th, much hatred for the Gallaghers and Mr J Nail, and some bafflement as to what 'handbag house' actually is, that said if you were to make a compilation of the suggestions it would be TOTALLY GREBT as I will prove soon.

The choice between Shampoo and Kylie turned out to be no choice at all - "Trouble" by a mile. I'm expecting a clear winner in this poll, though.

I think I ticked Hyperlogic on the basis that they were called Hyperlogic.

I don't remember this Deuce one, oddly.

Is the Shiva 'Freedom' the same as the QFX 'Freedom'? Anthemic handbag on the harder house side?

Common People is gonna walk this.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I already feel sad that 'Common People' will win with like 100% or whatever, because it is a really really good song and yes I ticked it but it isn't THAT good. It certainly doesn't come close to Livin' Joy.

Yeah I couldn't bring myself to vote for Common People, esp. when there is so much else ACE stuff on this Now -- Baby D, Billy Ray M, Livin Joi, JX, and THE OUTHERE BROS!!! Oh yeah.

The guy from Del Amitri is Momus' cousin.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)

ALSO: HOW SHIT IS THAT SUPERGRASS SONG????

"I need you inside me tonight"

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Cis put 'Think Of You' on a compilation for me the other month, and reminded me a) just how terrific and bubblegum it is, and also b) it is not rude exactly, not compared to eg Lil Kim, but it is very...direct. Whigfield, she does not mess around when telling you what she wants you to put where.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember that line! Only the alternate 'I need your body tonight'.

Rivers Cuomo used to be really attractive. What happened? Other than a nervous breakdown and a beard, obviously.

Isn't Montell Jordan and MN8 THE SAME SONG? I'm sure you can sing one right over the top of the other...

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-03-13 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
no they're totally different!

they are both identical to 'Ticket To Ride' however.

Trip Hop Showdown

Of course, either version of Karmacoma knocks both Protection and Glory BoXor into a cocked hat.

We've now reached the point where this U.S. observer has heard fewer than one-third of the songs. I expect the number to continue to fall over the next several polls, as the British Isles accelerate their breakaway from American domination (only to eventually be recaptured by r&b).

i love 'i need your loving' but it is very much the 'got to get it' to the 'mr vain' of 'let me be your fantasy' which inexplicably seems to have been erased from now history!

what needs more love as well is 'right in the night'. it's based on bach for chrissake!

So much to choose from...

I was gonna say "Whoomp!" but then I realised it's not the Tasg Team version. So not that.

Jam & Spoon, then?

3x YSI

Best Jam & Stella has to be 'Stella' or 'Odyssey To Anyoona' which I think was the basis for 'Fine Me'. I didn't like the vocalist Plavka much although spotters may recognise her from The Shamen's 'Hyperreal' on which she was fab!
