Now 31 takes us to the (current) halfway point! in the Now polls, and finds Britpop in 'full swing', backed up with a host of fondly and less fondly remembered tracks. DJ Daz should take note of Love City Groove, unfortunate pioneers in the 'put some rap in Eurovision' category. Reeves and Mortimer cover the Monkees, Duran Duran cover the Furious Five, Shaggy tackles Mungo Jerry, Baby D take on the Korgis and Ladysmith Black Mambazo surely fulfil a lifetime ambition by getting to work with China Black.

You'll also get to vote in the Now 30 face-off - Portishead and Massive Attack share the spoils with East 17's "Stay Another Day" a mere two votes behind. Bucketheads in 4th, Boos in 5th, much hatred for the Gallaghers and Mr J Nail, and some bafflement as to what 'handbag house' actually is, that said if you were to make a compilation of the suggestions it would be TOTALLY GREBT as I will prove soon.

The choice between Shampoo and Kylie turned out to be no choice at all - "Trouble" by a mile. I'm expecting a clear winner in this poll, though.

My dad (who went to Bristol uni) possesses a book entitled "Krek Waiter's Peak Bristle", which featured amusing cartoons accompanying various useful phrases. Taught me everything I know. Ah, here it is (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/185306792X/202-5802694-1882263).

I met the author! For reasons I can neither remember nor imagine, when I was in the sixth form we had fairly frequent guest lectures. One was Derek Robinson. He did mention that book, but explaining to schoolkids in Bristol how Bristolians talked may have not seemed a great plan. His title I believe was 'Rules For Life'. The format was for the talk to leave enough room for questions at the end. He had the headmaster right next to him for this, but it was Robinson choosing whose questions to pick - and unlike the head, he didn't know me, and went for me quite early on. "You said that everyone should get fired once, to learn where the limits are. Does this also apply to getting expelled from school?" He ummed and ahed for a few moments before the headmaster announced that sadly it was time to leave it there.
