Now 31 takes us to the (current) halfway point! in the Now polls, and finds Britpop in 'full swing', backed up with a host of fondly and less fondly remembered tracks. DJ Daz should take note of Love City Groove, unfortunate pioneers in the 'put some rap in Eurovision' category. Reeves and Mortimer cover the Monkees, Duran Duran cover the Furious Five, Shaggy tackles Mungo Jerry, Baby D take on the Korgis and Ladysmith Black Mambazo surely fulfil a lifetime ambition by getting to work with China Black.

You'll also get to vote in the Now 30 face-off - Portishead and Massive Attack share the spoils with East 17's "Stay Another Day" a mere two votes behind. Bucketheads in 4th, Boos in 5th, much hatred for the Gallaghers and Mr J Nail, and some bafflement as to what 'handbag house' actually is, that said if you were to make a compilation of the suggestions it would be TOTALLY GREBT as I will prove soon.

The choice between Shampoo and Kylie turned out to be no choice at all - "Trouble" by a mile. I'm expecting a clear winner in this poll, though.

i didn't like it much at the time but had this sense of it being good in some way. 'worthy', i suppose. i blame Tarantino indirectly.

Why do I think what?

I hate "A Girl Like You" cos its a tedious meat-and-potatoes dirge that Dodgy could have done, and I hate it worse because it was done by someone who was a hero of mine so I tried to like it for AGES.

I like "Alright" cos it's alright, alright?

'A Girl Like You' for me felt more like late 60s US smokey cinema rock pastiche (i noted the similarity to Urge Overkill when Pulp Fiction came out), so I don't hear it and think of Dodgy! But point taken of course.

Obviously I was and am hugely happy that Edwyn C had a big hit and made lots of money. But I still don't like it.

I sort of see the Tarantino thing but that whole burgeoning segment of yth-cult turned me off too, I to this day have never seen Pulp Fiction. (OK now this does not seem like much of a claim but for a student in 1994-5 it was).

I don't like Supergrass when they start making slower and more pompous tracks, but Alright was about the only Britpop song outside Pulp that I really, really liked.

Was it me or did everyone in Britpop videos look like they were having an ace time? Like the Madness vids of old? I may well have a case of rose-tinted specs here so do set me straight if need be.
