1990 in full swing in Now 18 - a particularly mixed bag as the Now series still gamely attempts to please allcomers with a bit of everything. Could anyone have liked everything here, or even 80% of it? I was bracing myself for a groundswell of La's support but they seem well back in the chasing pack, thank heaven.

Did Jimmy Somerville's career actually exist in a chart sense at this point or was he getting on Now albums through some vile Faustian pact? I don't remember him having a pop-cult presence at all in the 90s.

The Beautiful South song is better than the La's song because

i) squawking along in imiation of the lady bit in "A Little Time" is quite amusing.

ii) nobody has ever said "A Little Time is about heroin actually" AS IF IT WAS SOME HUGE SECRET ONLY THE INITIATE MAY KNOW.
