1990 in full swing in Now 18 - a particularly mixed bag as the Now series still gamely attempts to please allcomers with a bit of everything. Could anyone have liked everything here, or even 80% of it? One theme that's been coming out in these polls and comments is the people who liked - or made themselves like - almost everything on the first Now or two they got, even if time has since mellowed their sensibilities. It's the old debate - can you train yourself to like something?

Meanwhile a photo finish on Now 17 sees Adamski's "Killer" the victor, with Beats International a single vote behind, and Happy Mondays and Depeche Mode one behind that. The write-in polls reflected the closeness, with no consensus on what was best, though 'worst' was hogged by Phil and The Yoobies, as per. Bobby Gillespie's highpoints were drawn across the man's remarkably long career - special tips of the indie hat to the "Velocity Girl" diehards, there.

LET'S VOTE

The fact that the vote has closed on 17 already, and I have not voted yet despite (no, BECAUSE OF) the fact it is at home, seems to sum up my week. Bah.

'It's My Life 90' didn't seem that different to the original 'It's My Life'. 'Close To Me 90' uses a HIP. HOP. BEAT.

There was also 'Freedom 90' by George Michael, in the year of bobbins reworks.

Betty Boo is far and away the greatest song on this NOW.

I wish you'd all cut Phil Collins a little more slack. So many great moments! I couldn't just pick one.

I was in a bar about a year ago with a friend who moved to London from Belgrade when he was about 10 in 1992. He heard Dirty Cash, and was all like "What's this? This is AMAZING".

Quo Selecter

My eccentric penchant for saying YES to Status Quo bizarrely continues. One day I am going to listen to a Status Quo album (perhaps the one with 'Down Down' on it), and I expect I will enjoy it too. I'm interested in 80s Quo too for some reason. What was going through their minds? How they managed to survive, their status and mandate in the pop domain in the time of enhanced nuclear paranoia...so much to explore.

Also I can't believe 'Little Brother' gets on here but the sublime 'Nekkid In Teh Rain' did not. Another classic case of NOWs shonky second single selection syndrome.

I'M AN ALI-HEN!

Sting should've played along and called his single 'An Englishman In New York 90'.

Somebody should YSI the Shinehead version. Tom?

this is the first Now where an obvious winner hasn't leapt out at me! (Betty B v Sinead O'C v Roxette v PSB - HOW TO CHOOSE, NOT FAIR!) And I'm starting to remember loads of the songs from the time rather than discoveries in later life. This is all very exciting!

Mistah Operator whatcha waitin for?

I think 'Fascinating Rhythm' is only William Orbit's second foray into chartdom after producing the Loadsamoney song for Harry Enfield (!).

WAY too little love for Wilson Phillips! The crystal clear voices! The harmonising in the a cappella bit! The unbridled optimism in the lyrics! The gorgeous women!

Belinda Carlisle. What a hasbeen!

From: (Anonymous)
Belinda Carlisle is a selfish big in cunt. Thats right a cunt. She can't play an instrument or if she does, she cant play one well. We all hate you belinda Carlisle. Da Brat was right. You are hasbeens. Your a fucking user and abuser and hope you burn out soon. We don't fucking care what you say you fucking cunt. You have the right to not like us and we have the right to not like you, nor support or regard you even at your death bed. Hows this sound on the 2001 tour in NYC. A man said "I love you Belinda Carlisle. And you said in a smart ass way "Oh really. You don't fucking know me." What a selfish fucking cunt you are. We hope to see you burn in hell you cunt. The rest of the Go- Go's may have talent. And that we commend, but you have no fucking talent you may not even written you own songs. Oh and another thing Cunt Carlisle. You never made a difference like supporting sick, or dying people. Once again, you selfish cunt. Your a hedonistic free loeader, a porker since your as fat as a cow, and a useless talentless hasbeen. Even as an arrogant asshole John Lennon was from the Beatles. He made peace with people. Written songs and had more talent than your puny little hedonistic cunt will ever do. We hope you stay a hasbeen, oh and another thing! Dont join the Go, Go's cause we don't fucking have to buy your useless junk. So thank you Cunt Carlisle andwe hope you fucking ball you eyes out for this!!!!!.
