poptimistsIt's Heat #3! It's early because I've got a lot of work to do but the other poll will stay open until midday.
1. You get SIX TICKS to dole out to your favourites, unless you have earnt an additional tick by simply filling in the text box at the end of the previous poll.
2. The six top-polling songs will go through to the 2006 final.
3. There is no rule #3.
The poll will stay open until lunchtime on THURSDAY 21st APRIL GMT. Or so. My lunchtime works out about 4pm GMT at the minute so basically 'when I get to it.'

Beautiful, sparkling production, gorgeous close harmonies in the chorus, and argh Ne-Yo's delivery is absolutely heartrending.

Echoey drums, eerie guitars, and a chorus that floats around in the cold of space somewhere. (My love of it was such that I built an entire haunted-sounds mix around it, even.)

As I said about the previous Utada candidate, warm and generous. Sometimes she seems to spend more time on her production than the songs, but this is a very neat little melody.

Date: 2011-04-19 11:24 am (UTC)Takes the utterly ridiculous overblown melodrama of emo, pairs it with the sense of pomp of something like Queen (you better make daaaaaam suuuure that you won't ever leave) prematurely to My Chemical Romance doing so with The Black Parade, whilst turning itself inside out with the sort of late-night muttering that propels it into being by far one of their punkish-est songs, despite the Death Cab lyricism (you've got this new head filled up with smoke and I've got my veins all tangled close to the jukebox bars you frequent as the safest place to hide -breathing is cheating) and I know all the fvcking lyrics still even though it's probably been at least four years since I heard it. Utterly stupid, completely teenage and absurdly catchy in its faux-heroism you won't ever be apart from me you won't ever be apart from me you won't ever be apart from me you won't ever be a paaaaart!
[nb: it's not like I find the lyrics ~meaningful~ in a 'writing on my pencil case' way because I am not 14 and have a healthy sense of their fleeting scan but the thing about emo like this, during TBS and Brand New's imperial phase, is that it took the ability to recreate mental states that they'd been morbidly perfecting over their navel gazing sophomores years and then blew it up into a thesis artform; stupid, yes and frequently unpleasant but sentient and sensual]
Ed: I feel I should point out that I can't listen to things at work so the quoted lyrics are off the top of my head and potentially RONG but that is the joy of retronautical pop studies.

Date: 2011-04-19 11:44 am (UTC)OH WAIT in my mental listening I've remembered what the best bit is (it has like 14 chorus/bridges) and it is the bit that does a little pop-rock headlong of the variety every Disney starlet worth their salt can do with-

and then interrupts itself for the bellowed 'BUT I JUST WANNA BRING YOU DOWN SO BADLY BUT I TRIP OVER EVERY WORD I SAAAAY, I JUST WANNA BRING YOU DOWN SO BADLY in the worst waaaay' -because TBS do the dual/echo-vocalist thing that first and second wave emo did it all layers a bit confusingly but basically this is a fucking stonking Kelly Clarkson song c. My December and Demi Lovato or someone should look into covering it IMMEDIATELY. If only to provoke the internet.

Date: 2011-04-21 06:22 am (UTC)For anyone who hasn't heard it, here's I Was A Lover; lush melodies disrupted by a strangely joyous boshing and piles of static fuzz. The famous description of them is as the barbershop quartet at the end of the world but they're much more reminiscent of the best electronic sampling by Return To Cookie Mountain (the album this is off) and creating such beautiful, tender stacks of piled song:
