A blippy techno record is at #1! No, me neither, but Yolanda Be Cool and D Cup don't care. Slow week though - the highest new entry today is #20.

[Poll #1597384]

Lower reaches watch: Jedward are in at #80 with their Blink 182 cover, the Mercury nominations have nudged The xx and Mumford & Sons further up into the top 100 (Laura Marling's album has jumped 82 places up) and DERE LORD "Don't Stop Believing" has been on the chart for 91 weeks :O

Two Number Ones in a row that weren't new entries!

Ushy & Pit - perhaps unfairly I'm comparing this as I listen with "OMG" (which I thought was great) and it's just not as good, a bit too 'constructed' I think. Unintentionally hilarious moment: Pitbull's spiel ends with an "OK" that sounds like it was accompanied by a tremendous Gallic shrug. NO TICK.
Bassy - agreeably short but not really catchy enough. NO TICK.
Pendy - immensely enjoyable, and pretty immense too. TICK.
Vicky - don't like her voice, cos she barks. Unintentional The Police moment: "the King Of Pain and hurt". NO TICK.
Girly - "900 channels but there's nothing to see" wow what a startlingly original insight you have there Mr. Scouting. NO TICK.

"Double Trouble" vote = I haven't heard Lily & the Prof yet (and also want to give BOB & Hayley another go) so decision PENDING.

Also, an update on [livejournal.com profile] koganbot's challenge from last week. I'd say "What If" does have a strong tune, but at this tempo the song comes out a bit too Glee for my liking. Might work OK as an album cut, as a bit of filler between the bangers?

OK, "Airplanes" wins. Lily loses out by not actually singing the title (yes, I know Lindy Layton never sang the word "Dub" either but the bar needed to be raised this time). Mark Ronson is runner up - good beat and tick-worthy for that - but the song's not all that.

And I wasn't around to see my challenge taken up!

In crucially important news, apparently Jason DeRulo is now Jason Derülo, with an umlaut over the u and the r lower case. I haven't done any research into this matter, but perhaps he is trying to counter the fact that no one knows how to pronounce his actual name, a problem that he can always blame on his parents, since he probably doesn't want to hold his fans accountable. (Née Jason Joel Desrouleaux, at least according to Wikip.)

Coming soon!

I thought "Airplanes" was bland when I first heard it, but the chorus has forced itself on me. Hayley's presence is all-consuming and I don't remember anything about what BOB is doing, a couple of minutes after hearing it. She makes the silly, bite-sized lyrics sound important.
