R Kelly, Sugababes 2.0, Fiddy Pence and Johnny Cash are through, with some last minute vote-switching giving Will Young the last spot. On to heat #5!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do this on five or more of the eight heats and get an extra nomination slot for 2004! (thx to [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus for this suggestion)

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1483394]

Extra ticks for this heat go to me, [livejournal.com profile] friend_of_tofu, [livejournal.com profile] ijgrieve, [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus.

Today's heat also has a sad footnote - !!! drummer Jerry Fuchs died yesterday. RIP dude.

I think I found a minute+spare change clip of the MU, actually? Should still have the url in my browser history, was only a couple of days ago that I looked it up.

From poptimist polls you'd think Delta Goodrem was the biggest thing to hit the charts since sliced JLS (ha ha I so typed JSL...) - anyway, I can't recall a single one of these and think that I am confusing her with Lisa Loeb. Should I just resign?

Do not remember the ABS single which isn't Back To The Limbo. Can anyone hunt it up?

Vote for the T. Graham Brown! (But I haven't ticked it yet because I've forgotten which one it is.) He's an old country guy and quite excellent; his sound is actually very soul, but that's true of a number of country singers. I'll look for a stream and post below if I find one.

It is pretty poor, isn't it? I largely voted for 'acts I generally like but who were clearly having off days'.

hmm, yes it's not really the sort of heat you need an extra tick in, is it? Grrrr.

Oh well, will probably give the 7th tick to S Club. Frank's post below has sold me on it.

The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album is my favourite of the year, and I hadn't heard any of their other records before, so I was quite excited to hear "Maps" earlier this year, as everyone said it was their best...

..but it's kind of boring, no? It's nowhere near as good as anything on their new record.

My contribution to this heat was "Magic Stick", which is a great song that people should listen to and tick. (However, since Youtube is blocked at work I can't post a link. Some other ticker please oblige.)

S Club "Love Ain't Gonna Wait For You"

British disco almost always carries a chill, which is occasionally a virtue; inexplicably, "Love Ain't Gonna Wait For You" feels as hot as Thelma Houston (which probably explains why none of the Brits here are supporting it, but maybe some Murricans will give it a whirl).

And here's the studio track, courtesy of the Non-Embeds.

OK, this is the only stream I could find for T. Graham Brown's "Middle Age Crazy." The site is weird, since it'll give you one or another of the tracks from The Next Right Thing, so what you need to do is keep refreshing the page until "Middle Age Crazy" comes up.

Tell me about Amy Studt. I don't think the song is anything special, but I'm surprised that Britain produced a rock-pop teenpopper who sounded a lot like the American dentyne rock-pop teenpoppers of the time (an excellent example of which from Rose Falcon is coming up in a few heats); of course, that style was in the process of getting overwhelmed by the generally much better post-Michelle'n'Pink'n'Avril angst girls.

Busta!

I have NO idea what you're all on about with this being a weak heat. I could tick twice as many as I'm allowed (and that's before going through the unkowns)! For example there is, beyond the obvious ones--

1) The Sounds - I have no idea whether this did anything beyond the borders of Scandinavia/Europe, but it was HUGE here. Still as awesomely sharp and brash and raucous as it felt back then!

2) MISS INDIE, stone cold classic (h8as to the left etc)

3) Ja Rule & Ashanti - sweet, swirling chorus that just makes me smile like an idiot, with an abs ADORABLE Grease take-off video

4) Dancehall-inflected Blu = slow, smoldering burn:

And both Me Against the Music and Love Profusion are totes underrated! (Here, have both original and remix versions of the latter, to prove point.)
