Massive shock and horror in heat #2 as... ok never mind, Beyonce, Justin & Electric Six are all comfortably through. Evanescence and Blu/Sean whizz past the Frank Fergusons to get the last two spots.

Perhaps we'll have an upset in today's heat instead - will Outkast bear the brunt of the 2003 ubiquity tick fatigue? Let's find out!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do this on five or more of the eight heats and get an extra nomination slot for 2004! (thx to [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus for this suggestion)

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote

[Poll #1480198]

Extra ticks for this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe, [livejournal.com profile] ijgrieve, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and me.

Awesome. Dizzee and Dresden Dolls roar into an early tie for the lead with Outkast. My two favourite tracks up there. Hurrah!

Well, one of my nominations is up there, so I should probably do some repping. Alt country prettiness and sadness, with a nice riff:

Great Eurodance!

Here's the song that was #2 in my 'most under-rated songs from the Now polls' list.

One of the best dance covers ever, with a great video to match.

You know, I have a slight soft spot for that Mark Owen song. I'd forgotten it until I saw it written down there.

My vote for B2K is effectively a placeholder tho frankly WHY BOTHER with the rest of the songs when you have Gurls and Boys by Good Charlotte I mean really.

Still thinking about flipping to (ha) Flip Reverse... or other!

I still vividly remember the first time I heard it: all of 30 seconds of it, when it was up for best video game soundtrack song (iirc) in the VMAs. And it STILL completely blew me away. All in all this tune's probably my biggest hip hop moment of the decade (so, for serious now you guys, it had BETTER GO THROUGH).

Ha, MySpace mislabeled the album tracks. "Fuck 'Em" is track five here, the one mistakenly called "Whoremonger" (and the one labeled "Fuck 'Em" is actually "Mississippi").

The chord pattern reminds me of "Mountains Of The Moon" by the Grateful Dead, of all things, which maybe becomes clearer if you hear the excellent screwed and chopped version, correctly labeled here, seventh track. Or maybe you just have to be me to hear the similarity.

I should mention that the MySpace links never work for me, they always default to some parent page or other. :( This may just be an issue (of the licensing kind, no doubt) over here, though, maybe it's fine for the uk people?

MySpace is usually one of my last resorts, simply because my DSL modem can't really handle it, so the tracks keep shuddering to a halt. Unfortunately the YouTube rip of "Fuck 'Em" is just incredibly bad. Ah, here it is on Lala, and if that doesn't work you can try Imeem, though they tend to block you for a while once you've played one track, and Lala knocks you down to thirty seconds.

Here (on YouTube) is an alternate take of the Dead's "Mountains Of The Moon."

The Lala worked, thx. :) (Amusingly, because it usually does, the Imeem didn't. Licensing, bane of the international internet music nerd!)

YouTube is blocked at my w3rk and it's not on DailyMotion but it's very important that you all listen to and enjoy 'Finest Dreams' because it is a storming electro-swoon of 'Umbrella' proportions and if you don't tick it you are WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG.

There's way too much good stuff in this heat that's not getting a lot of love, but one that really shouldn't be languishing on 2 ticks is OK GO.

Not embeddable (thanks EMI), but here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BxfpbyV-uc)

Yeah, okay, this isn't going to change any ticks at this late point, but I was just doing my final run-through and was reminded of how AMAZING this is:

I was always mainly 'eehhhhh' about Linkin Park (esp their early stuff), with occasional forays into liking individual singles a fair lot, so the fact that this made me go 'OMG' at length when I checked how the heck it went anyway was rather the surprise. How come THIS one never became a standard, dammit, world? (Oh wait, too inventive and exciting, right.)

And while I'm on the nu-metal tip, I will also declare that Going Under = the only Fallen-era single that's any cop. That's right, I just hated on Bring Me to Life AND My Immortal. :D

This was around at about the same time as "Toxic" and I always link the two for their use of stringz.
