Xtina and her leather chaps storm to the lead in Heat #2 - she's joined in the next round by Fischerspooner, Avril, Ms Dynamite and Nelly & Kelly's morally dubious duet.

What's in store today? Quite fittingly, it's the debut of Sugababes 2.0...

  • You now only get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll. Oh stop whining, it'll make for a more interesting top 40 at the end.

  • The top five will still go through to the next stage, but now it's going to be that little bit tougher to get there. If your favourite song isn't doing so well then try and convince people in the comments as to why it's so good!

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1460995]

Q for the comments box: What's the best song up there that you hadn't heard before today? [livejournal.com profile] chuckeddy's earned an extra nomination spot for the 2003 poll and so can you, if you tell us why you liked it...

Seriously, PEOPLE! YOU LOVE THIS TRACK. You simply forgot to vote for it somehow. It's okay! People make mistakes. There's still time to REDEEM YOURSELVES.

Not a particularly deep heat, but there are 2 songs here that are currently contending for my top 10 of the entire decade, "Fell in Love with a Girl" and "Everywhere". Everybody please tick those songs. Here is "Everywhere":

On the contrary, I think this is comfortably the toughest heat yet. I could have picked 12 easily.

I wonder why this is doing so poorly here in comparison to last heat's Avril, given that, (1) "Complicated" is so copying this one's format (sensitive confessional-sounding verse, sugar-rush chorus), (2) this sounds even better than "Complicated," John Shanks generally writing better tunes than the Matrix and giving them better settings. Of course, in "Complicated," Avril at least has something to say, whereas Michelle, while sounding confessional, rarely has anything interesting to confess, and on this song she's just giving us airy, diffuse obsessiveness. But (3) since this song is about airy, diffuse obsessiveness, the words work - you can spend the whole song wondering whether she's actually seeking/seeing God rather than a boy, until the last line where it's finally got to be a boy (probably). That last line is really good, too: "You're in everyone I see/So tell me/Do you see me?" So in the end she's just a girl with a guitar, in her room, with her dreams (rather than being, say, a stalker).

Anyhow, in the U.S. this hit months before Pink's going confessional on "Don't Let Me Get Me" and set the stage for Avril and Vanessa C. and, from there, Hilary, Ashlee, and Lindsay, and for Max 'n' Luke 'n' Kelly going for the sweet and the storm on "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes," and the Veronicas' "4ever" and then a whole lot of heavy-handed stuff that is worse like Avril's "Girlfriend" and Katy kissing a girl the rest is history.

aaargh, I'm so busy with actual work at work, I'll have to come back with AWESOME Michael Gondry Lego video links, but here is why you should vote for Fell in Love With A Girl:

1) the video (link later cos I can't find on YT for some raisin)
2) the icon for this VERY COMM comes from this song, via
3) the awesome 'other' video http://www.rathergood.com/punk_kittens

It is one of his best, but this is a really difficult heat. It's got the two best alternative/indie songs of the year in it ('FILWAG' and 'HTSITYS') and one of the Sugababes' finest moments, so that's probably 3 votes gone for a lot of people immediately.

Really good turn out I felt. Most notable absences probably the Clipse, and DJ Sammy. Also no Michelle Branch who people are excited about above. Also can't get the right version of Girlfriend but a) I put on the no-Nelly NSync only version off the album and b) it's youtubable above so whatevs.

Question for Polyphonic Spree fans: there's two tracks on this playlist, neither of which has quite the name given in the poll. Which, if either, is correct?

Brandy (I love love love the whole of the album this comes from, sooo underrated):

Okay, I clicked my 7. At least 5 of which I might wind up changing if I get around to checking out other songs here -- everything is fair game but "Grindin'" and "Heather's Wall," which is possibly either the spookiest and most spacious country song of the decade or second spookiest and most spacious (after "I'm Tryin" by Trace Adkins). It very well might make my top ten singles of the decade list, and I've never liked anything else by the singer. The video follows, and sorry if the link doesn't work as usual. Watch it anyway.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_uiIdf3Xfw

Anyway, I especially hope to find time to check out that Cooper Temple Clause song listed above, since I vaguely remember liking something by them once, but I have no memory of why, or even who the heck they are. I hope they sound like the Fall, but they probably don't.

Date: 2009-09-23 02:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com
Okay, not quite like the Fall, but energetic and tuneful (more Three Johns maybe?); I voted for it. Didn't sound like Brit-pop to my ears, or at least not what I hate about Brit-pop.

Best song I *may* not have heard before is a tie between that one, Michelle Branch, and believe it or not (since I live in a bubble with no contact with the outside world), the Sugababes' "Freak Like Me." Actually, that one wins. I'd heard of the Gary Numan sample when it came out, I think, but never actually (knowingly) heard the thing til now.
