Princess Superstar, Truth Hurts and Puretone all tied for the lead, with Missy and Christina making up our five qualifiers in Heat #1. Poor old Abs.

Next up we have a heat packed with so much awesome stuff that I'm beginning to regret changing the rules...

  • You now only get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll. Oh, stop your whingeing! It'll make for a more interesting top 40 at the end.

  • The top five will still go through to the next stage, but now it's going to be that little bit tougher to get there. If your favourite song isn't doing so well then try and convince people in the comments as to why it's so good!

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1459239]

Q for the comments box: What's the best song up there that you hadn't heard before today? If you tell us all what you liked about it I'll give you an extra nomination spot for 2003...

I ticked some stuff innit, but I can't emphasise enough that if ppl repping any of these tracks post links to YouTube videos, I will watch them and have readily changed my tix in the past. I rarely have time for going thru the Spotify playlists these days, though.

Ms Dynamite ker-leeeeearly!

I can prove this through choruses alone. The Squad have a repetitive drone "crossroads, crossroads, crossroads" - and against this we would place "I'm jus Ms Dy-na-mi-teeeheeeeee"?

Grr, embedding disabled on it. But still. THERE IS BUT ONE CHOICE.

From: [identity profile] infov0re.livejournal.com
If it's between those two, Dynamite every time - Crossroads is a terrible dirge that doesn't play to the Squad's strengths; Flip Reverse is easily their best song - it's a fucking brilliant song - but this is just horrid.

What's your opinion on Let's Start Again with the newly-svelte Squad?

From: [identity profile] infov0re.livejournal.com
That's not bad, actually, but seriously, they should probably drop the whole Blazin Squad thing now.

However, the pinnacle of Squad is this:

which is the cover of Flip Reverse by Korean pop star Jang Woo Hyuk. I did a double take first time I heard it.

I loved this song SO MUCH at the time. Oh man. Let's try for an embed....

Swings from bare voice over insistent bouncy synth to rawked up guitar, both poppy and punky. Just joy joy joy.

A slightly better heat than the previous effort, but I'm still getting the sense that 2002 was a poor year for pop (other than the emergence of Girls Aloud obvs).

Easy ticks for Fischerspooner, Avril Lavigne, The Coral and Dirrrrrty Christina, borderline ticks for Pink and Garbage, et voila, Robert's your father's brother.

Song for Mindy McCready

First of several posts to try to entice you into listening to Mindy McCready. This song for Mindy - that I would sing for Mindy, if I ever met her - isn't one you can vote for, since it's 1982; is my favorite rock song of the '80s that's not by Guns N' Roses or The Fall (unless you count stuff like "Billie Jean" and "Lips To Find You" as rock, which you probably should, but anyway...):

Her life disaster outdoes Amy's and Rihanna's'n'Chris's and Lindsay's and Britney's put together. I don't know if any of this informs her music, which I don't know all that well anyway, but once I know it I can't put it aside, for better or worse, watching this woman in her trap. Also, whatever the legal system does for people's recovery from addiction, it doesn't seem to be helping hers. From Wiki:

Personal life

In 1997, McCready became engaged to actor Dean Cain.[5] The couple broke up the following year.[6]

McCready also dated former NHL hockey player Drake Berehowsky.[7]

In May 2005, McCready's ex-boyfriend, Billy McKnight, was arrested and charged with attempted murder after beating and choking McCready.[3][8] The following July, McCready was found unconscious in a hotel lobby in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida after attempting suicide. She was hospitalized for a drug overdose after washing down a large amount of undisclosed drugs with alcohol.[9] That September, McCready, who was then pregnant with McKnight's child, attempted suicide for a second time by overdosing on antidepressants.[10]

On March 25, 2006, McCready gave birth to a son, Zander Ryan McCready.[11]

On December 17, 2008, paramedics were called to McCready's home in Nashville after an apparent suicide attempt; they transported her to a hospital after finding wounds on her wrists. [12]

May 9, 2009: Mindy has been seen again in the company of Billy McNight and they have released a single together on Billy's Album.

Wrote this on Rolling Country a couple of weeks ago:

Out of morbid curiosity I listened to Billy McKnight's "Sweeter" f. Mindy McCready, which highlights Mindy at least as much as Billy. Despite Mindy fucking up everything else in her life, her voice is as steady and strong and warm as ever. This is a mush ballad that reaches for the sky, and in the soft parts before all the mountain climbing Billy's voice is inadequate - not awful but not giving much. He just doesn't have it. But when the strings build and the ascent starts, all the molten noise compensates for him, and Mindy melts the glaciers. I would definitely want to hear another album by her, if she can manage one.

[edit]Roger Clemens affair

In April 2008, the New York Daily News reported on a possible long-term relationship between McCready and baseball star Roger Clemens that began when she was 15 years old.[13]

Clemens' attorney Rusty Hardin denied the affair and also stated that Clemens would be bringing a defamation suit regarding this false allegation. Clemens' attorney admitted that a relationship existed, but described McCready as a "close family friend." He also stated that McCready had traveled on Clemens' personal jet and that Clemens' wife was aware of the relationship.[13] Clemens issued a statement saying only that "I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry."[14] However, McCready confirmed the relationship as being sexual in nature.[15]

On November 17, 2008, McCready spoke in more detail to Inside Edition about her affair with Clemens. She stated that their relationship lasted for more than a decade, and that it ended when Clemens refused to leave his wife to marry McCready. However, she denied that she was 15 years old when it began, saying that they met when she was 16 and the affair only became sexual "several years later". [16]

[edit]Legal troubles

This article is in a list format that may be better presented using prose. You can help by converting this article to prose, if appropriate. Editing help is available. (November 2008)

In August 2004, McCready was arrested in Tennessee for using a fake prescription to buy the painkiller OxyContin. Although she initially denied the charge, she pleaded guilty and was fined $4,000, sentenced to three years probation, and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.[17][18]

In May 2005, she was stopped by Nashville police for speeding and then arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.[19] A jury later found her not guilty on the charges of DUI, but guilty of driving with a suspended license.[20] That July, she was charged in Arizona with identity theft, unlawful use of transportation, unlawful imprisonment, and hindering prosecution.[21]

An arrest warrant was issued for McCready the following month for violation of her probation when she left Tennessee without permission from her probation officer. McCready was also charged with not reporting to her probation officer during the month of July.[22] She was finally arrested in Florida and returned to Tennessee. McCready faced a hearing later that year on charges of violating her probation on a drug charge by failing to check in with her probation officer and leaving the state without permission to go to Florida.[23]

In July 2007, McCready was arrested in Ft. Myers, Florida. She was charged with battery and resisting arrest for an apparent scuffle with her mother.[24] The following week, she was taken into custody at the Nashville International Airport for violating probation.[25] In September, McCready was sentenced to a year in jail for violating probation. In addition to the jail time, she was ordered to serve two more years of probation and perform 200 additional hours of community service. She was released from jail in December.[26]

In June 2008, McCready was arrested in Tennessee for violating the terms of her probation set in September 2007.[27] Sentenced to 60 days in jail, McCready turned herself in on September 30, 2008.[28] After serving half of her sentence, she was released early for good behavior on October 31, 2008.[29]

Here's my Voice review, where we explore hair-color ambiguity and the relation between Rubio's philosophical musings and her sound recordings, the relation between nouns and verbs, and why the '80s more than the '70s was the disco decade.

This was doing quite well in the early running, but has now slipped back. The YouTube version below is the original, not the (more pop) Herbert remix. But I love both versions. And anyway I kinda wish more people had carried on making blip-vert house tracks after 2002.

UNFAIR: a) I have THREE nominations in this heat, which means I only have three ticks for Other Things, !!! b) MAKING ME CHOOSE BETWEEN COME INTO MY WORLD (either version) AND EMPIRES, WHYYYYY (nb: Kylie lost, the poor dear)

Well pleased to see Dirrty running away with the lead, though; it was a key tune in my early-noughties POP CONVERSION.

Also, some killer genre-mashing action from the Blade II soundtrack, STUPENDOUSLY catchy!

And the no-youtube-love ones:

Ying Yang Twins - Drop Like This 2001
MASSIVE: epic synths, huge chorus, just overall incredible. (I'm just saying: I heard this two months ago and it's on here, NUFF SED.)

Kemopetrol - Everything Under Control
Keeping with the epic (a lot of my noms this year qualify for that description, haha), another all-time favourite. YOU ALL NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE, FR SRS. Stuttering 3/3 rhythm, crashing, sweepingly epic chorus, simple but powerful piano motif. Also: accordion middle eight!

Best song I hadn't heard before: Lady Stush

Most mediocre songs I hadn't heard before (though admittedly I didn't listen to several that I assumed I wouldn't like, and are probably much worse than these: Ms Dynamite, Solomon Burke (a major disappointment, just really dry and stodgy, soul music left in a museum to petrify), Rogers Sisters, Fischerspooner (which is okay until they start singing, I guess, and I actually like their Kylie remix, which has some Donna Summer in it. Actually, it might be better than the Stush song, but I'm voting for Stush anyway.)

Worse than I remembered: The Streets

Still not sure what I think (but it definitely didn't grab me): Ying Yang Twins

Favorite song here (for karaoke reasons and otherwise): Toby Keith
