It's a new year, it's time for some...

...NEW VOTING RULES!

  • To make things a bit more interesting, there is now a maximum of SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll. That's right - six.

  • The top five will still go through to the next stage, but now it's going to be that little bit tougher to get there. If your favourite song isn't doing so well then try and convince people in the comments as to why it's so good!

  • As I'm sure you all know by now, the rules are always subject to change thx to my ongoing struggle for perfection, so if this year proves agonising for one and all we can rethink it for 2003. Also please bear in mind that I'm the one having to type all these bloody songs out and therefore I can do what I like, mwahahahah.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

So let's get on with it!

[Poll #1457810]

Q for the comments box: What's the best song up there that you hadn't heard before today?

NOOOOOO this is an awesome heat for rnb and i've had to cut down from twelve and i am NOT IMPRESSED WITH THIS NEW DEVELOPMENT

Choosing six is much harder, but I reckon this is a good call overall. I found this heat quite tricky but then obviously I'm 50%+ indie so yeah.

I suspect that when people have more spare/uncertain ticks, they're more likely to go looking for stuff they don't know. As a specific example, I had to throw away Missy, Robyn, and Elves to get it down to six, and I'm TBH unlikely to shift one of those for an unknown. But if I had ten, then there'd be a spare spot...

if the number of ticks changes for every year that's gonna be harsh on a lot of songs. as it stands there will be much more from 2000 than 2001.

happy for it to be 6 for all remaining years tho if that makes things easier for you - fewer songs going thru means a quicker conclusion (theoretically)...

I think six was plenty for this heat... Puretone, Christina Milian, Foo Fighters and Shimon/Andy C were insta-ticks, but then I really struggled to find two more I liked enough to warrant a tick... ended up plumping for Missy and Idlewild.

Let's be real here: this song is pretty much the most classic of all 2002's desi-sampling rnb jamz.

My song of the year, anyway - I have come to realize that I do have Songs of the Year, defined as "if this doesn't get through the voting I will throw a quiet tantrum."

I am disappointed, if unsurprised, that Bushwacka's beautiful Billie Jean remix isn't getting any support. One of my top five favourite remixes ever.

I really, really like it but I couldn't spare a tick; this was actually quite a strong heat for me and when I had to go back & remove four ticks it unfortunately fell by the wayside. :(

Edit: Actually nvm I realised I prefer it to 'Bad Babysitter' by a long straw. TICK.

Probably not an official vid (I haven't looked), so I'll just do a link rather than an embed:

This was the song that made me fall in love with Bedingfield; it's the opening cut on his first album. From the first few seconds you just know the whole LP is going to be an awesome pop record.

- ONLY TWO TICKS FOR TRINA. Poptimists I am DISAPPOINTED IN YOU.

- Truth Hurts' qualification is UNDER THREAT but the INCREDIBLY ANNOYING "Bad Babysitter" is walking it.

- ELVIS VS JXL has TWICE THE VOTES of J-LO AND JA RULE!!!!!!!!000111 o_0

Bit of a poor turn out I reckon - only 32 available so around a quarter missing. And a few of the ones I did find I think I have the wrong version - see "4 My people" and "Agenda Suicide" and possible also Mis-Teeq? Also I have two versions of Boys by Britney and I forget which one is the right one. Feedback appreciated!

Much agreement re: Addictive upthread. CLASSICCCCCCC.

That said: REPS (nevermind that it's unlikely to garner ticks :D):

The VNV Nation is an all-time favourite; EUPHORIC GOTH-TRANCE*, you guys. Okay, so it may be 7 and a half minutes long and not really kick in until three minutes in, but when it does, it is worth EVERY SECOND OF THE WAIT. (Random footnote: I once described it as "wibbly sparkly death on a stick", but this is probably not as evocative to most, heh.)

I would say this is the best thing they've ever done, except that Honour still exists. Certainly their best, by miles, this decade at least!

*) okay so in proper parlance it's ebm, but who that hasn't dug into the industrial scene actually knows that term? :)

Also there's this:

For full impact listen to on gorgeous, sunny day. And uh ignore the lyrics, which are kinda rubbish...

To be the first one to answer the auxiliary question, my top new-to-mes ended up being the Ms. Jade, Shimon & Andy, and (a bit of a surprise, frankly!) the Saint Etienne. So props to applicable nominators! (I also quite liked the Robyn, but that one just missed getting a tick, sorry!)

Hey Kat - just wanted to say thanks for doing the polls. I have found this really interesting and fun and a good way to hear new tunes / genres that I just normally wouldn't, because it's always lovely to see the advocate posts (anyone being bouncy about music makes me happy).

I'd also previously been intimidated by this community (for raisins to do with my rock-bottom self esteem rather than the members, I hasten to add) and now I see that I was silly to be so.

In short - WIN and THANKS.
