Seriously, Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige singles in this heat aren't negotiable ticks. And I'm not even the hugest fan of either of these!

WHY ISN'T BEDINGFIELD SWEEPING THIS?????

a) It's not the brand new direction for garage people thought it might be, it turns out that it's just garage, which has not traditionally done well in these polls (see The Lex's regular wailing and gnashing of teeth)
b) Continued making records, none of them as good (it shouldn't be a factor, but it often is)
c) Taint of TashBed!

What brand new direction for garage did people think it was? Garage has done decently enough here considering no Americans vote for it - a few weird disappointments but So Solid Crew, Sweet Female Attitude, Mis-Teeq etc all went through, Oxide & Neutrino nearly did. I mean it's only b/c they did well that I'm extra disappointed about eg B15 Project.

b) is definitely a factor - indeed it may be because DanBed's career wasn't garage ENOUGH, so 'Gotta Get Thru This' was a false promise. Still ticked it but in a tougher heat would have easily let it go.

The real question is why the Strokes are taking up one of the qualifying places.

I have ticked all 3 but will untick Strokes if it seems like it will give a chance to either of those.

The Keys and Blige both seem...okay to me. Far from great. Maybe tickable, maybe not. Probably better than the Ludacris, Roots Manuva, Adult, Avalanches, Strokes, or Minogue. Not necessarily better than the A*Teens or Streets. Which also aren't all that great, to be honest. The more of these I listen to, the more depressing the list seems -- may be the first time I tick fewer than 10, just to avoid halfassedness.

I think my personal designation for Blige and Keys (which I actively disliked when it was actually popular) would be "OK but still should be Poptimists consensus-y." Like when you can't understand why [insert record you don't personally like that much] didn't do better on Pazz and Jop, from a distanced vantage point. Not in an outraged way, but perhaps in a more quizzical sorta way.

Bedingfield isn't even qualifying any more, which is quite the thing! I'm happy enough for Alicia and Mary J. as the benficiaries, and I'm thrilled that we aren't promoting the Strokes, but it still feels wrong.

Oh well, DanBed should be a strong contender in the Second Chance 2001 poll.
