Heat #2 was a close battle, but ultimately Madison Avenue pipped Madge to the post to join Kelis, Dr Dre & Eminem, Sweet Female Attitude and Mint Royale in the 2000 final. So who's up next? Surely not more Kelis?

Three-way Wu vote split but don't overlook the absolutely epic freakout of "I Can't Go To Sleep"

finding this surprisingly easy again - but reserving a tenth tick for if a track i like needs it to go thru

i think i'm eschewing 'Got Your Money' and 'Hip Hop' as i just class them as '99 - both great tho

I found nine to tick on a first run-through, and when I struggled to find another I really cared for, left it at that. I believe four were my nominations, and I have a feeling none of them will make it through.

All the Wu tracks are off Iron Flag? I'd kind of drifted off by that point (despite Enter the 36 Chambers being one of my favourite albums EVAR)

I suspect many haven't heard the K-Gee and indeed i only heard it within the last year but it's great imo

This is a damn tough heat! Went with 10 on instinct but leaving out Beenie Man and the other two Wu-Tangs HURTS, none of the ones I didn't tick in the previous two heats hurt. (Wu-Tang so unlucky to have three tracks in one heat...still I guess 'Gravel Pit' is a favourite to go through.)

Don't feel as bad leaving out PJ Harvey and Spiller: both great tracks, but PJ's 'This Is Love' is much better from this year (and both are from her worst album anyway); 'Groovejet' is somewhat overrated I feel, it wasn't even the best track released THAT WEEK (Vicky B's 'Out Of Your Mind') let alone in the whole decade.

BIG PIMPIN':

Lil' Kim - How Many Licks? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBqOFMaIpHc) (embedding disabled)
I think this might be my favourite track of the decade which isn't 'Flowers'. The apotheosis of ho-rap, anyway - that first verse is just unbeatable, Kim at her most cheerfully, scandalously nasty, and the acid squelch of the beat is just so much fun. This was one of the first hip-hop tracks I ever memorised the lyrics to - still got 'em off by heart - and I still play it out whenever I DJ. How great an opening line is "I been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces - aw hell, I even fucked with different races". And then she basically tops that with every succeeding line right up to the climax of "he had a BIG-ASS DICK and a HURRICANE TOOONGGGUUEEEE!"

Toni Braxton - 'He Wasn't Man Enough' - I think I'd actually forgotten about this for a while, but in LA a few months ago I suddenly got it caught in my head out of nowhere, and it just would not leave even though I played it maybe 934034 times in a row? The chorus is just AMAZING - "do you know I dumped your husband, girlfriend? I'm not thinkin' 'bout him, but you married him..." I love love love the deep husk of her voice. Really encourage you to give this a try if you can't remember/never heard it.

Dead Prez, Missy's 'Hot Boyz' and both these Kelises are standards which everyone knows and loves, right?

Was I actually just asleep for all of 2000? This really is a learning experience for me. I don't even recognise the Spice Girls or Missy ones. Keep it up, &c. Valuable stuff.

Here's 1 that I ticked which are doing very poorly and some people may not know.

Hoku - "How Do I Feel (The Burrito Song)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlnKveedx-I (no embedding)

I can't find "How Do You Like Me Now" on youtube. Oh well.

Ticked 9 off the bat, including a few I doubt will get much luv -- an excellent M2M track that (I imagine) has less of a chance than "Don't Say You Love Me" did (had no idea this was actually a single!); the Toby Keith tune; yet another awesome Hoku song. Nostalgia isn't enough to bring me to tick Graduation Song (which I nominated :/) or LFO.

Absolute must tick: Missy, Lil' Kim, D'angelo, ODB f. Kelis. Last one's going to go to one of the Wu's or Dead Prez, haven't decided.

Highly encourage people who are even slightly likely to tick any country to check out two options here, Dixie Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" and Toby Keith's "How Do You Like Me Now":

"Well uh, I don't think we'll ever get tired of killin' this guy..."

"Girl OF My Dreams" is actually "Girl IN My Dreams," but the guy who nominated it got the title wrong.

Can't stay online. but I recommend that you do whatever Dave Tells you.

Because I reckon few if any people have heard it (the alb, Make It Better, apparently sunk into immediate obscurity, which is an honest crime what with it being EXCELLENT), THE DUBSTAR:

(Excuse the totally random photoslide, only other version on youtube was a 30 sec clip of the official video, heh.)

Dear lord, though, is it ever obvious how zero attention I was paying to pop music round the turn of the millennium. Another heat where I only know a handful of tracks off the bat, and most of those retrospectively, at that. (It's so very true: thank god for youtube!)

(Luckily 2001 was Year of Getting HOAM INTARNETZ, which put a radical end to my Being Clueless abt Current Music era. Phew! More than one year's noms worth of youtubery this intensive could not be healthy!)

4th and 5th FITE

From: [identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com
As is only just, Gravel Pit, Got YOur Money and Groovejet are all locks to qualify now.

However 4th and 5th could get BRUTAL. Currently it's a three-way between Lil' Kim, Kelis and Dead Prez (AND IN THE POLL), but there's a HYOOJ chasing pack.

If things stay this way, I might consider moving my Missy vote to go into a Dead Prez/Missy/Lil' Kim run-off -- though I'd strongly urge some kind person to vote Toni into said run-off too! (I already voted for it.) Anyway, will check back Monday PM.

Ties and runoffs

My suspiscion is that a chunk of us WANT a runoff, between as many tracks as they can engineer given the state of the poll, and have been voting strategically in order to ensure it. (I know I have).

What that says about the process as a whle I'm not sure. But I am kind of lookign forward to that runoff a whle lot. Especially so now that Toni is in it. :)

Phew, nearly missed this vote. Delighted to see ODB occupying both the top two spots!

I didn't read the comments about close ties for 5th place, and I appear to have inadvertently put another song into joint 5th. Whoops.
