Heat #2 was a close battle, but ultimately Madison Avenue pipped Madge to the post to join Kelis, Dr Dre & Eminem, Sweet Female Attitude and Mint Royale in the 2000 final. So who's up next? Surely not more Kelis?

Three-way Wu vote split but don't overlook the absolutely epic freakout of "I Can't Go To Sleep"

finding this surprisingly easy again - but reserving a tenth tick for if a track i like needs it to go thru

i think i'm eschewing 'Got Your Money' and 'Hip Hop' as i just class them as '99 - both great tho

I found nine to tick on a first run-through, and when I struggled to find another I really cared for, left it at that. I believe four were my nominations, and I have a feeling none of them will make it through.

All the Wu tracks are off Iron Flag? I'd kind of drifted off by that point (despite Enter the 36 Chambers being one of my favourite albums EVAR)

No, the W. Iron Flag is in 2001 - it has their amazing 9/11 track "Rules" on it ("WHO THE FUCK KNOCKED OUR BUILDINGS DOWN?")

That and Gravel Pit - I think their only real pop crossover as a group - are amazing.

This is a damn tough heat! Went with 10 on instinct but leaving out Beenie Man and the other two Wu-Tangs HURTS, none of the ones I didn't tick in the previous two heats hurt. (Wu-Tang so unlucky to have three tracks in one heat...still I guess 'Gravel Pit' is a favourite to go through.)

Don't feel as bad leaving out PJ Harvey and Spiller: both great tracks, but PJ's 'This Is Love' is much better from this year (and both are from her worst album anyway); 'Groovejet' is somewhat overrated I feel, it wasn't even the best track released THAT WEEK (Vicky B's 'Out Of Your Mind') let alone in the whole decade.

BIG PIMPIN':

Lil' Kim - How Many Licks? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBqOFMaIpHc) (embedding disabled)
I think this might be my favourite track of the decade which isn't 'Flowers'. The apotheosis of ho-rap, anyway - that first verse is just unbeatable, Kim at her most cheerfully, scandalously nasty, and the acid squelch of the beat is just so much fun. This was one of the first hip-hop tracks I ever memorised the lyrics to - still got 'em off by heart - and I still play it out whenever I DJ. How great an opening line is "I been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces - aw hell, I even fucked with different races". And then she basically tops that with every succeeding line right up to the climax of "he had a BIG-ASS DICK and a HURRICANE TOOONGGGUUEEEE!"

Toni Braxton - 'He Wasn't Man Enough' - I think I'd actually forgotten about this for a while, but in LA a few months ago I suddenly got it caught in my head out of nowhere, and it just would not leave even though I played it maybe 934034 times in a row? The chorus is just AMAZING - "do you know I dumped your husband, girlfriend? I'm not thinkin' 'bout him, but you married him..." I love love love the deep husk of her voice. Really encourage you to give this a try if you can't remember/never heard it.

Dead Prez, Missy's 'Hot Boyz' and both these Kelises are standards which everyone knows and loves, right?

yeah this is a good point - also w/r/t 'Hot Boyz' which I think of as '99 even more than those two.

Was I actually just asleep for all of 2000? This really is a learning experience for me. I don't even recognise the Spice Girls or Missy ones. Keep it up, &c. Valuable stuff.

tbh I love all three so much that I don't think I can untick any of them. only change I can see myself making is swapping D'Angelo for another of the Wu-Tangs. Mumba also vulnerable: that sort of pop tends to sound better in one's memory than when you actually go and listen to it again.

I am AMAZED that Dubstar were apparently still going in 2000 let alone releasing nomination-worthy songs :/

Ah yeah, that makes sense, I think I remember you recommending it. Maybe I drifted off earlier :)
