Blimey, I've already got 253 nominations for the best song of 2000! Plus at least two dozen that have been shunted over to another year.

You've still got until 8pm BST on Monday to nominate, which you can do by going here and leaving a comment (don't worry if you think someone might have already nominated something, I can easily get rid of duplicates in my spreadsheet).

[livejournal.com profile] meserach has kindly put together a Spotify playlist of the nominations so far, feel free to add stuff in there but please leave a comment on the original post as well, otherwise I might miss your nomination.

New guideline: if a song made the UK top ten in a particular year then that will definitely count as its poll year. Re-entries will default to the earliest year.

Stuff on Now 46 that no-one has nominated yet:

Mary Mary : "Shackles (Praise You)"
Gabrielle : "When a Woman"
Tom Jones and Mousse T : "Sex Bomb"
Shania Twain : "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)"
Billie Piper : "Day and Night"
Louise : "2 Faced"
Damage : "Ghetto Romance"
Steps : "When I Said Goodbye"
Stephen Gately : "New Beginning"
Backstreet Boys : "The One"
Moby : "Porcelain"
Coldplay : "Yellow"
Richard Ashcroft : "A Song for the Lovers"
Black Legend : "You See the Trouble with Me"
York : "O.T.B. (On the Beach)"
Marc Et Claude : "I Need Your Lovin' (Like the Sunshine)"
Frankie Goes to Hollywood : "The Power of Love" (Rob Searle Club Mix)
Different Gear vs. The Police: "When the World Is Running Down (You Can't Go Wrong)"
Southside Spinners : "Luvstruck"
Alice DeeJay : "Will I Ever"
Angelic : "It's My Turn"
Rank 1 : "Airwave"
Lonyo (Comme Ci Comme Ca) : "Summer of Love"
DJ Luck and MC Neat featuring JJ : "Masterblaster 2000"
Tru Faith and Dub Conspiracy : "Freak Like Me"
Jamelia : "Call Me"
Vengaboys : "Uncle John from Jamaica"
Fe-m@il : "Flee Fly Flo"
Scooch : "For Sure"
Atomic Kitten : "I Want Your Love"

Feel free to go and nominate any of the above on the original post! (Though I hereby veto Stephen Gately)

Oh, good call on the Spotify playlists for these!

How's the voting going to work with so many tracks?!

I'd suggest polling all noms (even tho many will end up with only one or two ticks) but doing it in blocks over 2-3 weeks. Up to MC Kat tho of course.

btw i know the following songs were originall released before 2000 - if that's a factor in whether to include or disqualify:

Broadcast - Echo's Answer ('99 single, '00 album track)
Sunship - Cheque One Two (but i think the '00 version is a remix so may be OK)
MJ Cole - Sincere (but can include the 'Re-Cued' version woot)

And I already seconded your Mary Mary nomination. I've actually had it stuck in my head for 2 days since you mentioned it. But that's ok, as it is a GREAT song.

I can't believe no-one has nominated "Yellow"! It's a pretty solid song, though the video is awful. I was meaning to look at my music last night for the songs tagged as released in 2000, but I didn't get round to it. On the other hand, if you have 253 noms already, you don't need anymore.

i think Yellow probably should be nominated, but i'm not sure i have the time or energy to defend it myself ;)

it's certainly "important" in terms of popular/high selling music in the decade, and undeniably catchy and more importantly, the Early Funny Stuff.

are we polling "important" stuff or stuff people actually love (ie will defend in stronger terms than "it's pretty solid")?

I actually can't remember how 'Yellow' goes apart from the "it was all yellow" bit :/

well yes, that's kind of my point really, i don't think i've the energy to do "important" stuff i don't love, but was hoping someone else might pick up the challenge (or indeed, we might find someone who loves yellow to do it)

If no one loves it enough to nom it, I think we're just as well forgetting about it completely!

But it may be useful to nominate a few bad tracks that some people will like so that they will split their votes rather than pile up the votes for other bad tracks that have already been nominated (if any bad tracks have been nominated).

Ha that Now 46 list is mostlt "point and laugh at 2000, and feel relieved that there's stuff which DOESN'T need nominating". Contemplated nominating 'Day & Night' but tbh should stick to songs I think are great rather than just OK.

50 nominations might be wise, I actually have LESS potential nominations from 2000 b/c I don't really remember it, wasn't d/lding random mp3s ad so on - as we progress through the decade all the memory-joggers will be within easy reach. For 2001 alone I was looking at the track listings of classic albums like The Blueprint and Aaliyah and wondering which tracks NOT to nominate. Perhaps a "one/two song(s) per artist per nominator" rule to keep us in check?

From: [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com
I confidently predict the noms list for 2001 will be 600+ songs long even with such a rule. :)

I'm against limiting songs per artist in any way, really. I would hope that nominators would realise that nominating 12 tracks by one act just makes it so much more likely that fans' votes would be split and therefore the act has less chance of progressing.

Can I suggest batches of 40 or 50 songs, and we can tick our 10 favourites? Possibly even more ruthless than that, since that would take say six polls to get down to 60 tracks, so that might require another three polls to get to a top ten. Perhaps divide the number of noms by 5 and let the top 10 of each such batch through, then a final poll to reduce 50 to a top 10? I'd also suggest two batches a week, or each year will take 6 weeks, and even on a perfectly efficient schedule, that means we don't get the final until next May.

Spotify playlist

Thanks for plugging the playlist. It's far from complete yet - it's colaborative, so anyone can help out by putting in other tracks that have been nominated.

(Once we have a full list that I can sort alphabetically by artist, it'll be easier to go through and check what has and hasn't been added. Only seen about three tracks thus far that aren;t on Spotify at all.)

Oh christ Uncle John from Jamaica uh.

Flee Fly Flo - I can't remember it but I'll nominate it so I can hear it!

The list so far

Kat, could I get a copy of the list of all the nominess so far? Preferably sorted by artist? It would make doing the playlist a lot easier.
