Tonight we're gonna party like it's 2009

It's been a while since we've had a big knockout poll competition, and I think I've got the perfect idea. As you may or may not be aware, the end of the decade is nigh. What better way to celebrate than to do a massive poll and spin it out for 6 months?

Let's find out what the best song of the decade is!

We'll do this one year at a time at first (obviously we've only had half of 2009 yet so that can wait until last) and spend a few weeks on each one to make sure we get plenty of nominees to discuss.

- Each year poll will have a nominations post and a poll post.

- Once the year polls are done, I can work out a suitably complicated way of selecting high-scoring nominees for the grand final in December.

- You can nominate as many songs as you like - if there's too many to fit in one poll I shall do HEATS mwahahahahah *rubs hands together*.

- Vociferous defense/attack of all nominees very welcome!

- A nominated song needn't have charted anywhere, as long as it was released somewhere that year.

- Obviously 'year of release' is subject to re-releases, different countries, being the 4th single off an album etc. If in doubt as to the year of release, nominate it in the earliest sensible year and if anyone makes a fuss we'll move it to the next poll. Anyone nominating a Robyn track can probably pluck a year out of thin air and it'll be fine.

- Terms and conditions subject to change if I've forgotten something important!

So what are we waiting for? Let's get started!

NOMINATIONS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE: What are/were your favourite songs of 2000?

My nommy nation for the best song of 2000 is "Stan" by the M&Ms.

[identity profile] martinv.livejournal.com 2009-05-26 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Great idea.

I think Daft Punk's One More Time was late 2000? I'll research more for later, as that's the only one that springs to mind immediately.

Groovejet's a frontrunner for single of the decade, in my book.

I was planning to do something similar on Twitter! This should be fun tho :)

I have a big spreadsheet of possible songs of the decadey things at home which I will dig up this evening and nominate away.

there's so much stuff from late '99 which overlaps into 2000 and it's difficult to decide whether to include them or not.

I think you have to nominate them, personally, given the impact on the charts it hard... just so long as we can rig it so they never, ever, win.

I was listening to rum trip-funk coves Fila Brazillia most of the 2000 time, plus various French dance (Laurent Garnier, Etienne De Crecy, Braxe & Falke), Warp stuff mainly.

I still think of this time as one of the weaker consolidatory periods for pop...compared to what would soon follow.

Should we second other people's nominations, to make sure those tracks get in the poll, or isn't that necessary? (In any event, I second "The Real Slim Shady" and "Jumpin Jumpin" and "Pull Over" and "Big Pimpin'" and "Try Again" and "Candy" and "Party Up" (which I reviewed) and "Say My Name" and "Freestyler" and "Oops" and "Southern Hospitality" and... and... and...

Haha, I was planning to start an Albums of the Decade thread this week myself (while I've still got vacation and have time to be around for the discussion). Should complement this nicely!

Noms pending LOTS AND LOTS (and also lots) of release year checking, ahaha. I was paying ZERO attention to pop in 2000, so everything's only been heard retroactively...

I have no record of what singles I voted for in Pazz & Jop in 2000 (at least not that I can find right now), but these were probably up there, assuming they were actually singles that year (and they're also unlikely to be already nominated above, though I haven't actually checked):

Kandi -- Don't Think I'm Not
Hoku - How Do I Feel (The Burrito Song)
Merle Haggard - Wishing All These Old Things Were New
Sara Evans - Born To Fly
D.A.D. - A Kiss Between The Legs
Ludacris - Southern Hospitality

Can't find your ballot in my archives, either. I think that was a year you pasted 'em in at the least second.

Andrew Palmer managed to vote for Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever," probably on the pretext that there was a live version on the reissue, but even that was 1999. Rob Sheffield voted for Brian McKnight's "Back At One," which I don't even remember. Liz Armstrong's number one was Peaches' "Hot Rod," which I also don't remember. Scott Seward voted for Phoenix's "Funky Squaredance," which I'm sure I otherwise never heard of. Mark Sinker didn't get around to voting but did send the following to John Wojtowicz and then to me: "themetune to power puff girls ('arriving just in time...'), themetune to buffy, themetune to futurama, tie-in single by destiny's child to charlie's angels" - the last of which has gotten nominated a couple times on this thread. Scott Woods voted for Grandaddy's "Jed the Humanoid," whatever that is. And Don Allred voted for a whole slew no one's yet mentioned: Queens of the Stone Age "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret," Nelly Furtado "I'm Like a Bird," Outkast f. Erykah Badu: "Humble Mumble," James Carter "GP," Snake River Conspiracy "How Soon is Now?" Blackalicious "Deep in the Jungle," Lou Reed "Ecstasy," I'm Not Sally "Under Water," Marlee MacLeod "Walk You Home." And Sarah Manvel voted for Spiller "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)," whoever and whatever etc. But I'm not nominating any of these, just listing them in case someone else wants to.

'Romeo' is 2001.

I was really surprised to find that Hairy Diamond track is only that recent - had assumed it was much older because of the production style. Great either way.
