It's been a while since we've had a big knockout poll competition, and I think I've got the perfect idea. As you may or may not be aware, the end of the decade is nigh. What better way to celebrate than to do a massive poll and spin it out for 6 months?

Let's find out what the best song of the decade is!

We'll do this one year at a time at first (obviously we've only had half of 2009 yet so that can wait until last) and spend a few weeks on each one to make sure we get plenty of nominees to discuss.

- Each year poll will have a nominations post and a poll post.

- Once the year polls are done, I can work out a suitably complicated way of selecting high-scoring nominees for the grand final in December.

- You can nominate as many songs as you like - if there's too many to fit in one poll I shall do HEATS mwahahahahah *rubs hands together*.

- Vociferous defense/attack of all nominees very welcome!

- A nominated song needn't have charted anywhere, as long as it was released somewhere that year.

- Obviously 'year of release' is subject to re-releases, different countries, being the 4th single off an album etc. If in doubt as to the year of release, nominate it in the earliest sensible year and if anyone makes a fuss we'll move it to the next poll. Anyone nominating a Robyn track can probably pluck a year out of thin air and it'll be fine.

- Terms and conditions subject to change if I've forgotten something important!

OK decision made: I think Romeo and Run For Cover should go in the 2001 poll.

what's the rule of thumb here going to be? re, I'm assuming, album released in 2000/single in 2001?

I think if the single was a chart hit in the year after then we'll probably put it there instead. Eg I would put 'Paper Planes' in the 2008 poll despite it being on an album available in 2007.

Makes sense - though how would you deal with (I think) some of the Nelly and Mya nominations, when (I think) they were US chart hits in 00 and UK chart hits in 01? Better you than me!

I guess as we progress through the decade and everyone gets on the internet it'll become a lot more intuitive, as songs now "emerge" at the same time for everyone...

In that case, I guess my nomination of "The Call" has to wait until 2001 as well.-

But "Paper Planes" was a single in 2007, and an indie hit that got massive votes as a single in year-end polls for 2007, but then had a second life when the ads for Pineapple Express started playing, and became a bigger hit (esp. in the U.S. where it went top 5). That may be something of an exception, though, a single having two separate distinct lives, though the U.S. and Britain having different release schedules poses the same problem in different form. But there are plenty of singles that are released (or start getting promoted) from Sept. to Dec. and don't peak until Jan. to Mar. ("See You Again" comes to mind), and I'd generally give them to the earlier year anyway ('cept maybe the Dec. releases) because giving them to the later years seems like putting off our problems. Except I'd give late 1999 to 2000 for the purposes of our first heat.
