Tonight we're gonna party like it's 2009
May. 26th, 2009 02:56 pmIt's been a while since we've had a big knockout poll competition, and I think I've got the perfect idea. As you may or may not be aware, the end of the decade is nigh. What better way to celebrate than to do a massive poll and spin it out for 6 months?
Let's find out what the best song of the decade is!
We'll do this one year at a time at first (obviously we've only had half of 2009 yet so that can wait until last) and spend a few weeks on each one to make sure we get plenty of nominees to discuss.
- Each year poll will have a nominations post and a poll post.
- Once the year polls are done, I can work out a suitably complicated way of selecting high-scoring nominees for the grand final in December.
- You can nominate as many songs as you like - if there's too many to fit in one poll I shall do HEATS mwahahahahah *rubs hands together*.
- Vociferous defense/attack of all nominees very welcome!
- A nominated song needn't have charted anywhere, as long as it was released somewhere that year.
- Obviously 'year of release' is subject to re-releases, different countries, being the 4th single off an album etc. If in doubt as to the year of release, nominate it in the earliest sensible year and if anyone makes a fuss we'll move it to the next poll. Anyone nominating a Robyn track can probably pluck a year out of thin air and it'll be fine.
- Terms and conditions subject to change if I've forgotten something important!
So what are we waiting for? Let's get started!
NOMINATIONS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE: What are/were your favourite songs of 2000?

Date: 2009-05-26 03:25 pm (UTC)In 2000 I was listening mainly to Radiohead and Muse with a side order of Coldplay and whatever was on Xfm for dessert.
Ooo that reminds me - Mint Royale ft Lovely Lauren Laverne - Don't Falter.

Date: 2009-05-26 03:34 pm (UTC)I still think of this time as one of the weaker consolidatory periods for pop...compared to what would soon follow.

Date: 2009-05-27 11:41 am (UTC)Oh GOD. I just remembered this was roughly the time I spent a week hammering 'At Your Funeral' by Saves The Day RIGHT OFF THE FACE OF THE RADIO-TAPING WORLD by repeating it so much.
I still quite like it. Which reminds me that actually what I was mostly listening to at this point was early Offspring. And, err, Down I think. I definitely fancied Phil Anselmo, anyway.Fortunately my subconscious was into garage and hip hop so all isn't totally lost. Also I think I was still listening to a lot of trance. *goes to investigate internet*
Until about 2004 this is basically 'the wilderness years' for me. There's about three albums I bought then that I'd still listen to. And one of them's by Feeder.

Date: 2009-05-27 05:20 pm (UTC)Age 12 was "Hanky Panky" and "Mother's Little Helper" and "Turned Down Day" and "Lil Red Ridin' Hood" and "Eleanor Rigby" (which I classify as "folk music") and "Sunshine Superman" and "Sunny Afternoon" and "Steppin' Stone." Regrettably, at the time I didn't like the Supremes or the 4 Tops, and I hated hated hated "96 Tears," which may now be in my Top 10. It upset me at the time.
