It's been a while since we've had a big knockout poll competition, and I think I've got the perfect idea. As you may or may not be aware, the end of the decade is nigh. What better way to celebrate than to do a massive poll and spin it out for 6 months?

Let's find out what the best song of the decade is!

We'll do this one year at a time at first (obviously we've only had half of 2009 yet so that can wait until last) and spend a few weeks on each one to make sure we get plenty of nominees to discuss.

- Each year poll will have a nominations post and a poll post.

- Once the year polls are done, I can work out a suitably complicated way of selecting high-scoring nominees for the grand final in December.

- You can nominate as many songs as you like - if there's too many to fit in one poll I shall do HEATS mwahahahahah *rubs hands together*.

- Vociferous defense/attack of all nominees very welcome!

- A nominated song needn't have charted anywhere, as long as it was released somewhere that year.

- Obviously 'year of release' is subject to re-releases, different countries, being the 4th single off an album etc. If in doubt as to the year of release, nominate it in the earliest sensible year and if anyone makes a fuss we'll move it to the next poll. Anyone nominating a Robyn track can probably pluck a year out of thin air and it'll be fine.

- Terms and conditions subject to change if I've forgotten something important!

So what are we waiting for? Let's get started!

NOMINATIONS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE: What are/were your favourite songs of 2000?

Mary Mary's 'Shackles' is probably an early contender for song of the decade in my view.

Who are M-Dubs ft Lady Saw? Are they N-Dubz parents?

great calls on Lucy Pearl/Jill Scott*/Kandi/Wu-Tang/Mary Mary/Storm!

bad calls on Kosheen/Avalanches/D12/Fatboy!

I thought 'Oh No' was the following year...but you might be right. I had no idea bout SSC until '21 Seconds' hit, how out of touch.

I have never heard those Zed Bias or Wookie tracks knowingly - mp3 me up?

*the Theo Parrish remix was a couple of years later, right?

i (discogs) am right re 'Oh No' but i think it crept into 2001 (but not the charts bah). Romeo is ace on it. best thing they did imo (apart from 'Colder' on the 2nd album!)

i'll send u those tracks later (you know the M-Dubs/LadySaw?) - could've listed some more 2 Step but probably not worth it.

the fairly remarkable Theo mix of 'Slowly Surely' does seem to be 2002 yes. i only heard it about 6 month ago. the original i knew from listening to Gilles P on radio 1 at the time. Slum Village 'Players' has similar super smooth, luxurious yet sad Dilla production but that's another originally from '99 argh

I don't know the M-Dubs/Lady Saw either!! And it's always worth listing more 2-step. Actually if you have the Phaze 1 and Sunship tracks I listed those would be awesome too - I remembered them from the time but the mp3s have long since vanished...

also probably best to list 'Dooms Night' as the Timo Maas remix as the original popped up late '99
