It's time for the Ivor Novello Awards nominations! Curious that they only have three nominees per category (compared to the Brits' 5), but hey-ho, that's what you get by having my tight-fisted economical werkplace sponsor your event:

BEST SONG MUSICALLY & LYRICALLY
The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You
Elbow - One Day Like This
The Leisure Society* - The Last Of The Melting Snow

BEST CONTEMPORARY SONG
Dizzee Rascal & Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me
Elbow - Grounds For Divorce
The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

BEST SELLING BRITISH SONG**
Duffy - Mercy
MIA - Paper Planes
Coldplay - Viva La Vida

ALBUM AWARD
Duffy - Rockferry
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing

For those of you with short memories, Amy Winehouse won best 'normal' song in 2008, and best 'contemporary' song in 2007 (which event there is a poptimists post about here.

*Some unknown folk dude apparently.
**Why is this a nominated cateogory? Either it's the best selling song or it isn't, surely?

perhaps it means "best british song" wot was actually on-sale somewhere?

(as opposed to languishing on sheet music in ivor novello's drawer)

Best song about selling that is British?
Best song about selling to the British?
Best song about selling British products?

In any event, "Paper Planes" would be the winner, for selling The Clash to a new generation, and being about taking money, even if the taking has more to do with stealing than selling per se.

For a moment there I thought the second category was 'BEST GROUNDS FOR DIVORCE,' which made much more sense really.

Also I wasn't going to let this make me angry but just how the shitting fuckbuggery is ANY of those top three the best song musically and lyrically from the last year? I mean what sort of miniscutely small world would you have to be swimming around and around to think that? It's just beyond parodical. And oh look, they've put in 'Dance Wiv Me' as an exciting and down-with-the-kids nod to black people and electronica fans. Gosh, how insightful.

I mean it's not just that it's a crappy or boring list, it's that it's not even SANE.

That Leisure Society song is quite good. They've been on Radcliffe & Maconie a lot recently and this song has been known to reduce grown women and men to tears allegedly. In a good way.

I have tried before to find a complete list of Ivor Novello winners on the Interwebs because I think it wd be interesting to see what's been valued over the years. But no luck.

On the other hand I don't really care enough about "songwriting" as an idea to be botherd about this set of nominations. If you're the kind of person who worries about 'classic songwriting' then you probably liked the Elbow song, and good on them and you.

idk, I think stuff like the Elbow trades on some dreary idea of "classic songwriting" but I don't think it really is - there are always a few acts around whose craftsmanship (which I think is a better, more specific word) is their selling point, and for good reason. Ne-Yo and Taylor Swift are probably the obvious two for me, maybe Amy Winehouse too. On the ILX poll results thread, I said something about how the quality of Ne-Yo's songwriting is such that you can't really pin it down in one specific lyric, it's more about the song and its narrative in totality - how the lyrics work with the hook and with each other - it makes you think about what the nuts and bolts of songwriting really are.
