My first thought was "His N Hers era Pulp single cover". It's the font. And the airbrushing.
By the way, last minute entries to the Poptimists Tracks List (I'm torn between whether it'll be a Top 40 or a Top 50) will be accepted at leagueofpop@gmail.com until Sunday morning.
Also appropo of nothing (ie it doesn't deserve its own post rly), the new Lily Allen song contains an awesome song called 'Fvck You Very Much'. Rest of album appears to be her griping about him from the Chemical Brothers.
LOL no, I mean - they weren't bad enough for Katy Perry, so she rejected them. "Wot?? I suck! I can't sing this, this would make people think I'm GOOD!"
At this point, I would love if Kelly made an album that would actually go with this cover--some sort of very shiny disco throwback thing with her actually belting over the tracks, unlike most of the nu-disco singers we have today. A Donna Summer for the new millenium.
I don't think you should be setting your hopes that high. Max Martin doesn't strike me as "shiny disco throwback." I think we'll be lucky if she doesn't have more than one song about how she can be a TOTAL BITCH SOMETIMES. LIKE A BITCH. BITCH BITCH BITCH I'M A BITCH I'M A LOVER. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLBITCH.
Anyway, Kelly's strongest suit, regardless of what's going on behind her, is more often than not her earnestness, which is what put a lot of people off the last album I think -- it was near-total earnestness less mitigated by killer hooks. (I say "less" instead of "not" because people seriously undersold how hooky My December is.) Not that the two are mutually exclusive, but they're often perceived to be -- this was a stupid narrative that kept getting pushed on her last time out. I'm just hoping this isn't the bullsh1t "reaction" album, in which she decides to throw all hints of seriousness out the window. I don't really trust Kelly's sense of "humor" in her music, though she seems funny enough in interviews etc.
The song is written by Dr Luke, so it should be pretty good. He wrote it without knowing who would sing it and then filled in the words to suit Kelly. She also has new songs by Ryan Tedder, which apparently are influenced by Garbage.
Just looking back at this post, it sounds like I'm sticking up for her, so I would like to make it known right now that I can't stand her and her stupid shouty voice. Ugh. She doesn't deserve either of those great songwriters.
Yes! It's stuck permanently halfway between angry girl guitar rock and American Idol pop hooks, and is simultaneously both and neither, which might have been why neither demographic really went for it in the way that they did for Breakaway. Whatever the reason, after being initially unimpressed, it's continued to grow on me. It's probably one of my favourite pop/rock/mainstream albums of the past few years. The weird little bonus track, Chivas, which almost sounds as though it were recorded on a four track is grebt.

(Actually, no, it's an all right song, and I hope it really will be on the album, because I'm looking forward to hearing what Kelly can do with it.)

Date: 2009-01-02 08:15 pm (UTC)'My Life Would Suck Without You'. Is that meant to be...funny? Or an "attitude" signifier?
Also, I think we need a moratorium on lollipops in promo photos.
