HELLO IT'S MONDAY, THE CHARTS HAVE JUST BEEN RELEASED THIS IS ALL VERY EXCITING. Honest. Sorry, I should have done this before but regretfully fail at knowing which month it is, let alone what day. Many thanks to the vigilant [livejournal.com profile] koganbot for reminding me.

This week we have a half-arsed trio of songs that makes you realise you really should have listened to '808s and Heartbreak' by now.

I've never heard of the Saturdays. Are they an exciting new mainstream indie band, like what you'd expect from the name?

They're a Polydor/Fascination signing- a color coded Girls Aloud Juniors making the electropop Sugababes and GA aren't making anymore.

The Kanye song is quite classless lyrically- every time I hear it I feel sorry for the poor bitch who dumped him. Bet you she didn't see that coming! The instrumental is interesting though.

I wish the Saturdays had released "Work" or "Why Me Why Now"- god, they look like cheap highlighters, a ballad is NOT going to make me think they're deep or clever.

It seems ages since Fiddy last had a really excellent single but 'Ayo Technology' wasn't that long ago. I like this in a non-committal kind of way, he seems oddly out of place in the hip-hop landscape right now though and needs to up his game again.

'Heartless' has grown off me a bit but it's still good. I still maintain that it fundamentally sounds like some kind of trad folk song, Kanye as a wandering troubadour tapping into an age-old seam of the human condition and peddling these comforting cliches. The line "How could you be so Dr Evil" needs to not exist though.

I find the existence of the Saturdays kind of depressing.

I rly don't like Heartless - it's the weakest song on 808s IMO. Haven't heard the other two yet.

(Sorry about forgetting the poll! I have also had trouble figuring out what day it is.)

The beauty of the female specimens

Remarks transferred from here:

50 Cent "Get Up": Ominous and catchy, snarling and seductive, in other words Fiddy doing typical Fiddyness, but it's all sounding worn out. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

The Saturdays "Issues": All dressed-up in bright colors, but this is even more wan and exhausted than the Fiddy. I wonder what motivates even Saturdays fans to download it. But why content myself with wondering, let's go to the YouTube comments: "I Love This Song, Una's Part Is The Best But OMG At Mollie's Face @ 2:25!" "This is the best song they have eva done. Dey are so pretty & hav great voices." "love the saturday's!! such a talented girl group and nice to see Frankie bak! :)"* "they have amazing voices!!! they are also so beautiful! love the song..." "Una is absolutely sensational isn't she lol. The rest of the group is is great too but Una is some beauty of the female specimens." So the answer to my query seems to be "Una." NO TICK.

Kanye West "Heartless": Liked it a lot when it showed up on Billboard, but it isn't holding up very well. The eighth notes chug along nicely enough, while Kanye hums along, murmurs along, wails along. Lyrics are a rough sketch: his suffering... all the girl's fault... reminds of those Neil Young songs I listened to in high school. Half-assed and only half-affecting, but that's still a TICK.

*Hey, it's good to be back.

When I heard the Saturdays doing 'Issues' on their support slot for Girls Aloud I thought it was awful, but it's sort of grown on me since.

I don't like the Saturdays because the whole business seems very desperate, their first couple of singles were godawful and also – I'm not sure if this is a valid point or not – I'm bothered because the Sienna Miller-ish one is shoved in our faces on the assumption that she is sexy but actually she's rather hideous. But Issues is a perfectly nice little tune, I reckon.

I quite like the 50 Cent! I'm as surprised as anyone, believe me. It's like Dr Dre has been fiddling around with 'California Love' and put it through the bleep-wringer for good luck, then 50 Cent has dribbled all over it. But it kind of works despite his best efforts.
