Pink's shoved Kings Of Leon off the top spot, and everyone's favourite bassline trio Platnum have scored their second top 40 hit, hurray! I'm glad to see they've kept the geeky body-popper dude for this video...

Ha I had no idea Platnum had another single out. It's like a B-grade rewrite of 'What's It Gonna Be?' and really nothing special but still Any Good At All. Ditto N-Dubz.

MGMT - I have heard this, do not remember liking it or indeed how it goes.

I really don't think I can take either of the other two.

to Steve re: Bell Biv DeVoe - I am with you on that.

Wikipedia sez:

Ronnie DeVoe is now a real estate agent in the Atlanta, Georgia area but still remains with New Edition.[1] He is very passionate about nutrition, especially healthy eating, and is currently collaborating with the group Viking Pimps on their up-coming album.

It's a bit depressing that the Platnum song has charted when virtually no other bassline tracks have (and many far better), but it still gets the Any Good At All vote.

Yay P!nk

yay N-Dubz as well.

I have ticked a Boyzone song for first time ever in a [livejournal.com profile] poptimists poll. It is surely End Times. (Coming soon: hell freezes over, Westloife release tickable song. In that order.)

Liking the Waysis a lot too; sounds like early Stereolab (e.g. "Super-Electric")

STOP TICKING MGMT

Stop ticking Oasis first! At least the MGMT is, you know, any good.

I really like that Platnum song. Hurrah!

The rest can fvck off. Actually I am trying N-Dubz to find out what it sounds like but anyway, the rest apart from that.

K OK N-Dubz can stay too; I am such a sucker for that kind of slowed down minor-key stuff. Shoo to the rest of them, though.

You should give Waysis a chance this time.

I dunno, I heard it in the car with my parents the other day and it sounded rub. Will give it a youtube once I've finished watching Ghosthunting with McFly, though.

Well, the ultimate culprits (or I should say the primal culprits) would be the Beatles, Yardbirds, and Kinks, and throw in the Who there to prove that you can do this all at HIGH VOLUME and Pink Floyd to say you can do it continually and the Velvet Underground to say you should make it muddy. It all sounds like fearsome guitars imitating bagpipes, or turning the amps up to ten and jamming off the Beatles' "Rain." The opening to Status Quo's "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" would be relevant here (that song being the only Quo that had any impact in the U.S.).

Wow, that earlier N-Dubz is good, though kinda uneasy-making when visualized literally in the video. Lyrics to the new one could be a sequel to that one.

the only "right direction" for Oasis is OUT OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS AND PREFERABLY ALSO OUT OF LIFE, and ticking them will not encourage them that way!

EXPRESS YOURSELF CLEARLY

The more I think about it, I only remember The Way You Work It, and that was only because it was on my Dance Zone tape. But still.

It's a chart on the borderline tonight.

Oasis "The Shock Of Lightning": The vicious two chords from "96 Tears," a drone mashed into it with a spatula, and whining vocals diving down into the drone. That's most all there is to this, a few additional chords and feints at melody, but mostly the grind and roar. Too long, but it works OK, even if it's no "96 Tears." BORDERLINE TICK.

Boyzone "Love You Anyway": The tuba is too thuddy and the vocal layers too soggy, but when this finds its dance with "I'm delirious, are you serious" I roll with the tune. BORDERLINE TICK.

Platnum "Love Song (Thinking About You)": The bass minefield at the start gets in the way, and when the girl Platnums finally steady themselves the love-interest boy Platnum makes things tedious. I do like the song and style. BORDERLINE TICK, but this is several miles duller than "What's It Gonna Be."

N-Dubz "Ouch": Big-lunged babe wearily climbs her stairs, male vocalist harries her and she harries him back, and darkly dramatic chords show up to accompany her. The track slices itself up a lot. I need more listens to decide if this jells or stalls; so far is a BORDERLINE NONTICK but I could eventually be won over by its drama and ambition.

MGMT "Kids": Starts well with an appealingly pretty hurdy-gurdy and a solid four underneath. But the washed-out vocalists bleach away the beauty of their tones. Frustrating, though tuneful. I hate the baroque keyboard noodling in the middle. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Somebody needs to tell Pink that to be a rock star you usually have to produce and perform rock music. Putting gel in your hair and snarling a bit isn't really enough on its own.

And Trouble was much better.

There are other Platnum tracks out there that are much more awesome: U & I (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4cGjHXFOsXc) and Over The Heartache (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=58ThT6jniTk).

Love Shy isn't as good as Kristine Blond's (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8DT9rdVsYZE) version.
