Hello everyone, I'm doing some impromptu research.

[Poll #1264707]

As I said above, it's not a test so don't get too neurotic about it, I'm just curious. Feel free to discuss The State Of Pop In 2008 further in the comments, if you want. Linking to YouTube videos and that is very much encouraged; get on a soapbox.

I have the Pussycat Dolls - it's OK, some vg tracks there, but it's way too long (srsly I love PCDs and even I can't see any need for 18 songs by them on one CD) and, you know, not as good as the Danity Kane.

Yeah, so many albums are too long: Keak Da Sneak should've stopped two thirds of the way through, and V.I.C. halfway (and should've left out the damn skits), but then the All Albums Are EPs Rule might come to the rescue there. Santogold vs. Diplo* Top Ranking is an ugly botch, but if they'd held it to fifteen songs rather than trying to tumble in 35 maybe they'd have pulled it off. There are some terrific things on there, esp. the reworkings of "I Need Love" and "Posse On Broadway" and "Hood Nigga."

*Piracy Funds Terrorism is still one of my favorite sets of the decade.

I tend not to mind slightly overlong albums - I don't trust artists or record companies to do the editing for me - and a couple of inessential cuts on a 14-track album won't spoil it for me; I tend to cherrypick when I listen anyway. But 18 is a slog - unless the artistic vision is v focused or all the songs genuinely great, any 18-track album will end up being less than the sum of its parts. And with all due respect to the Dolls, focused artistic vision or consistent greatness aren't what I expect from them. The Lil' Mama album suffers from this too though obv her highs are higher than PCDs'.

yes yes yes! new single - "if a song could get me you" is out and has been up on her myspace for a minute. quite lovely, though the grammar's a tad awkward.

Buraka Som Sistema's Black Diamond will either be later this year or early in 2009. Already has two of my favorite singles of the year "Sound Of Kuduro" and the even better "Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)" f. Pongolove.
