Hello everyone, I'm doing some impromptu research.

[Poll #1264707]

As I said above, it's not a test so don't get too neurotic about it, I'm just curious. Feel free to discuss The State Of Pop In 2008 further in the comments, if you want. Linking to YouTube videos and that is very much encouraged; get on a soapbox.

some foals probably responsible, yes. i saw a band of young people on thursday night that were kind of some foals playing kings of leon songs, WRONG WRONG WRONG...

i did have big hopes for bassline but there you go (flipping smugpolice going invite only didn't help...)

My token indie pick for the '08 is The Little Ones. Both the last single ("Morning Tide") and the new one ("Tangerine Visions") are terrific sunshine/mum-pop. I must investigate their new LP.

i am still in mad thrall to late of the pier. must BUY the album...

i'm not so down on the charts this year as i was in the first few months (or as people seem to be in general here). even though the charts at the top end move like treacle these days, there's been lots of stuff popping up. it's been ok.

i think the only LOTP i like is 'The Bears Are Coming', because they didn't appear to make anything else that sounded like that

have you heard the Cut Copy and Midnight Juggernauts albums? u may well like 'em

thanks - yes, the alanpop/indie chart looks like this

1 LotP - Black Fantasy wossname
2 MGMT - er, the album
3 Presets - Apocalypso (what a terrible title)
4 CutCopy
5 Midnight Juggernaughts

tho i haven't given MJ much more of a look in - i loved Into Teh Galaxy, obv - but was not taken by the album. however getting that and LotP at the same time was just unfair on them.

i asked emma if it was ok to pack in my job to follow LotP around on tour. she said no. so here i am, still at HC.

i always thought Basement Jaxx would get there first re 'Apocalypso'

agree MJ album is ropey but not necessarily any more so than Cut Copy's

re-listened to Sebastian Tellier album last night and it's quite a grower (this isn't aimed at you particularly, but poptimists generally :)

I like the Tellier album fine but there is no way it's even going to end up in my yr-end top 20. It suffers from all the songs sounding exactly the same.

'Divine' and 'Elle' sound satisfyingly different from each other. It doesn't strike me as any samier than a whole bunch of stuff. I think the real downside to it is Tellier's often irritating affectation of 'fragility' in his vocals which didn't seem as bad before ('La Ritournelle' etc.) and the attempts at 'sexiness' generally fail.

also WHABOUT Ladytron? it's kinda auto-pilot for them but you CAN tell that they've really put the work in production-wise (as in it's probably their slickest most well crafted album yet, but doesn't sound as fresh and no real new ideas apart from Danny singing).

Velocifero is definitely in the 'buy when it's reduced to £5 in Fopp' category.

i gave it a good try. i think 'meh' sums it up very well. i hear bits of it every now and then in my head - but not craving to listen to it all again.

'Deep Blue' and 'Verses' really grew on me. the former is annoyingly repetetive but somehow gets away with it.

the ones i hear are from near the start. 'there's a ghost in me' and one with their TMd keychange in it that i can't recall the title of.
