I'm pretty sure "Umbrella" had leaked by this point last year?

And this year it might actually be hot! - BRING ON THE SUMMAR HITS! What's upcoming? Has anything been hinted at yet? What about from the spring's album crop?

i repeat my popular claim that e=mc2 is an awesome summer pop release

(er "popular claim" as in made on popular -- obv ALL my claims are popular in the other sense, if and when ppl realise what i'm talkin abt)

yes E=MC2 is an AMAZING summer album - there are at least five tracks there which would make completely incredible ubiquitous summer singles ('I'm That Chick', 'Cruise Control', 'OOC', 'Migrate', 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time') - stupidly though Mimi's singles schedule is apparently 'Bye Bye' (tinkly gloop which is still good and hilarious, but not a summer jam) then 'Love Story' (literally the ONLY blah song on the album). SURELY 'Migrate' at least will be a single though. "From the bar to VIP - migrate! From the party to the afterparty - migrate!"

elsewhere - 'Wearing My Rolex', 'American Boy' and '4 Minutes' are functioning pretty well in the sun! When 'Umbrella' emerged last year I think it was the first real anthem of the year, but 2008 has had a steady stream of the things so far. If 'I'm Going Out' is a single that could easily be another summer jam from Wiley.

It's a long shot for ubiquity but Ashlee's 'Boys' will almost certainly end up being my own summer anthem, ditto 'No Matter What' by TI.

Ne-Yo's 'Closer' will be huge, you will see, am pretty hopeful for 'Shawty Get Loose' too. Nelly's got about three all time classic summer jams to his name already so I expect his new album will provide another. And 'NO AIR' obv!

No Air's release date is something ridiculous like July, isn't it?

From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
Yeah it's July. That is only two months away though.

Yeah, I was going to mention "Wearing My Rolex" which is basically a) massive and b) has massive crossover potential - it seems to be gaining more and more momentum with a wider and wider audience.

(It also has a dance, and an easy one at that, which always helps.)

Dudes, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-qbtm50epU) just got linked to on Popjustice. I have been pissing myself at my desk for the last 8 minutes.

Oh, I'm being a moron - Rolex Sweep has the dance. Wearing is the superior track IMHO, though.

"Shawty Get Loose" didn't really stick in America (jumped quickly to number 10 but didn't hang on).

Lil'Mama is more of a big name over there isn't she? Lipgloss kind of did bugger all over here so I'm not expecting miracles, esp as Chris Brown is pushing his solo stuff here atm :(

'Lip Gloss' was never released here.

She won't be coming over to do promo stuff though :(

best summer moment of any song = the closing bar of 'I'm That Chick':

"I'm like that ~*UPTOWN HAZE*~ them ~*REAL THUGS BLAZE*~ we'll ~*TOUCH THE SKY*~ cuz I'm that chick you like!"

It is pure bliss.

also I did not know you were all talking about Mariah on Popular! where?

From: [identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com
not worth checking lex -- it was a little side-issue flurry during a not-very-interesting hot-day-innit squabble abt punk and technique, where mariah was (as she always is) thrown up as the "at least we can all agree to hate ms technique-over-soul" candidate for kneejerk comity

ugh I hate it when that happens. people - british people especially - can be so sour and stupid when it comes to people who rveel in ACTUALLY BEING GOOD AT SOMETHING.

Oh god really? The Westlife one is really bad; I really like her 'Without You' (much more than the original) but it wouldn't even make a Mariah POXX.

I don't know if I really want to know how well or badly 'Vision Of Love', 'Emotions', 'Always Be My Baby', 'Heartbreaker' and 'Can't Let Go' did...god, by rights she should be aiming for the No 1s record here as well as in the US.

She hasn't exactly done badly though - I think only Madonna & Kylie have had more top 10 hits than her over here amongst female soloists

If they pick the next Estelle single wisely (ie Magnificent) we could have a massive dub stomper on our hands.

Also the summer bosh-by-numbers is likely to be this effort (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8c099Zppkc&feature=related) from Alex Gaudino, which samples 'Brand New Pigbag' to within an inch of its life (and lifts the vocal line from Mousse T's 'Horny', yikes)...

Or this EVEN VWORPIER remix of Doom's Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_2g8ReehN8) that's going around...

MOAR BOSH (acc. to single release schedule!)

- new Eric Prydz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27CWz-YPtaI) (rub goth piano)
- new David Guetta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKD0TDw0cWw) (good, very Ultra Nate in spirit)
- new Freemasons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-_a90zxzGA) (does what it says on tin, v enjoyable if slow to get going)
- new Seal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgJk0uGsyU8) (yes THAT Seal - dull as shite but the Tiesto remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-b_aS7eobk) is WELL BANGING, proper uplifting 95-house style with extra hands-in-the-air)

So: the Gaudino is OK; I really like the David Guetta (but appear to have always quite liked David Guetta). Freemasons does what it says on the tin. Obviously a 12" mix - could probably do with another 4-5bpm, which it would get in the club. The Tiesto Seal remix is definitely good.

Eric Prydz: just a bit uninspiring, really. I see what he's done with the piano riff, but it descends into his usual overcompressed kick/suck/snare/bass thing and it's all a bit uninspired compared to the obvious WINNAR which is Guetta.

I'm v disappointed in the Prydz. Guetta is much less indie and way more Shapeshifters-y than usual = Tick VG!

Listening to original Seal vs Tiesto Seal is like eating a cake then eating a cake with ICING on it straight afterwards.

CIARA is back in the summer too - there's a short clip of her single 'High Rise' doing the rounds and it sounds pretty insane (like, Ciara singing opera insane).
