Not just formulaic, but capital-F Formulaic as if to say "I'm using the formula; it's not using me." Normally, such detachment loses me, but Annie usually connects, though often with her it takes a lot of listens for me to feel the connection. (Which might be the case here. I'm not melting or swooning yet.)

With this and Alphabeat it's like there's a bit of pop which has dropped any pretence of just 'referencing' the 80s and are just in full-on pastiche mode. Which is great, I mean, I remember Sly Fox too! But with this I think there's a really good song and the curatorial production gets in its way - all those kitschy sproingy noises are a distraction really. The nostalgia fest only works when the material's weak.

So I still really like it, because it's a good tune, but the production's getting horribly in the way.

The thing about Annie for me is that she's the epitome...well not of the popstar as cipher, that's Rachel Stevens or something. But of almost complete detachment.

This track has tuneage, 80s production tricks, "but now i'm thinking 'who's wearing your trousers now?'"...but I never buy much of it. Which is why Chewing Gum worked really well for me, because it felt kind of delightfully self-aware. Hopefully it'll grow on me.

I really like this, agree w/ Frank re: formula. It's generic in the great way that lots of minor r&b cuts are generic. Dunno why people are disappointed esp given the dross I know you go nuts for!

I know who would do this song better though: PARIS HILTON.
