I am now only two entries away from this track on my Popular project (http://freakytrigger.co.uk/popular) so it's time to ask the wisest people I know about it:

[Poll #1171459]

Two other questions (which might be the same)

- Why do people like singles in multiple bits so much?
- Why is this record still so enormously beloved out in the wide world?

Something else entirely: I picture the everything up until the end of Prof Brian's guitar wibble as the original video, the rest as George Michael and Axl Rose running about the stage at the 1992 tribute concert. This is because Dad very kindly spliced the only two bits of video we had of this together so I could a) watch it b) record the telly output onto a C90 c) learn all the words. Dad bought the Greatest Hits CD literally YEARS later.

I grew up with Queen and still have never got bored of Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it's so beloved because it's fun, silly, memorable and dynamic. I ticked "light opera bit" but to be honest, none of it would be any good without the rest of it. The payoff as they rock out and then return to the piano for the coda is among the most elegant in all pop.

I think Queen were better than this frequently (Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, Under Pressure, Seven Seas of Rhye, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy etc) but Bohemian Rhapsody is like a really good greatest hits album in one song. Not bad at all.

I don't think BR would quite make it into my top 100 songs of all time as I wouldn't go 'YAY!' if the video came on the telly (which it unsurprisingly doesn't, apart from in top 100 list programmes), but it's definitely in the top 1000.

Such as? If they did, they'd all be like that. And they're not. What singles are you thinking of?

Other suggestions?

Bohemian Rhapsody is great because it is so huge and preposterous and insane, except it is also actually RLY SAD and occasionally makes me cry.

Why is there a choice for NONE OF IT but not a choice for ALL OF IT FUCKING OBVIOUSLY?

On the other hand, Green Day had high hopes for 'Jeebus of Suburbia' but it barely dented the UK or US charts compared to their other singles around the same time. Definitely their attempt at 'Bohemian Rhapsody' though.

last lousy point

i gave it a 9. the last point is lost cos of the occasional sense of weariness you get when you have a sense of humour failure in pub karaoke, and probably cos of Comic Relief newsreaders LOL

That was incredibly funny, and I say this as someone who doesn't like the record!

i only docked it 1 for it's ubiquity i think - and maybe because the rockout is the most fun part and it takes a while to get there.

Welcome to the Black Parade is also in bits, but this is of course a modern re-working of boh-rap. And is also much loved the world over.

What I picture: a room full of lagered up 16 years olds in Bournemouth attempting to headbang to the ROXX0R section. At every single party for about a year. Happy teenaged memories...

(I'd give it 8, but it gets 2 whole points just for the memories)

ok i am hungover in a kyoto hostel waiting for even-more-hungover dudes to wake so srsly wtf? you all like this dreadful piece of shit song? it's just...stupid, silly, and pompous and takes itself too seriously at the same time. the voices are all completely annoying, it's just...really really wanky, unbearably so. UGGGHHHHH how can you like it? i don't get it! i mean i think queen might be the worst band ever actually, apart from oasis. it's so...so much pomposity for solittle purpose or effect. UGH AT YOUR TASTES
