when i first heard it i thought it was terrible - cheap and nasty and suggestive of self-imposed genre limitations e.g. all your synth sounds coming from the same place - instead of trying to use real brass or whatever.

i may have over-reacted a little but it does irk me how cheap it sounds.

I fvcking *love* Gonna Be Mine. Long may the cheap and nasty sound continue as far as I'm concerned, the moment bassline starts to feel glossier is the moment it starts the slow descent towards funky house badness.

Also the cheap, ravey asepcts are one of the main differentiators from 2-step as far as I can see.

I think 'Gonna Be Mine' is my favourite bassline track of them all. Love the schaffel breakdown.

There is NOTHING not to love about anything in the genre yet.

When I was listening to both of these on The Hits last night even my indie-loving flatmate suddenly perked up and went "ooh is garage back then? this is great". I hope this keeps going on to the summer because this is all perfect summer music.

Yeah I am hoping a new Golden Age of Garage is upon us - it just seems to go against all the useless hyped-up "authenticitude" trends right now (nb: not my word). Every time I see or hear someone moan "oh no, chav music", part of me sings (along to 'Gonna Be Mine') inside. (The other part of me wants to kill them.)

No! I shall check it tonight. On another change of subject, Estelle and Kanye's 'American Boy' video has emerged (hunt on youtube - lots have been taken down but if you search by date you should find it) and it is great. Two for an imminent video club post I think.

Have found it. I see it's made it onto Radio 1's C-list now, so hopefully she might actually chart this time, she definitely deserves more than she has so far, she just seems to have replaced Beverley Knight as the example given by writers bemoaning the lack of chart success british R&B singers have.
