Well, it's either Kimya Dawson (ex of Ver Peaches) or someone trying very hard to sound like her, and I've seen her do stuff much like this in concert, and the kids going mad for it were, er, not exactly kids. I could be wrong, but she's definitely got previous as regards selling stuff that sounds like this (some of it in the same whimsical jangle stuff but about grimmer subjects) to grownups.
Right, right - I just think that based purely on sound and content and visuals identifying this as "kids' music" when asked its genre isn't unfair. (I don't think its successful AS kids music which is why I assumed it was someone slumming it in the genre.)
It is indeed Kimya Dawson - together with some band called Antsy Pants - and the song is called "Tree Hugger". And yes it's from the Juno soundtrack. The embedded video is a fan animation, not official or anything.
Just to put this in perspective, this is definitely the least worst Kimya song on the soundtrack. In the interests of science I forced myself to check them all out on a listening post in HMV last night. Serves me right, I guess. The fact that this one's such an earworm must mean it has something going for it, though. Also the ramshackle accompaniment works in the song's favour here. (The other Antsy Pants song on the soundtrack, "Vampire", is borderline great, actually. The rest of the CD I declare toxic).
I should add that the poptimists angle here is that this soundtrack was the best selling album in the States a couple of weeks ago. Still #6 this week.
PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE GENRE OF THIS MUSIC
