Taking us up to the VERY BRINK of the Top 10.

17. FREEMASONS ft BAILEY TZUKE - "Uninvited"

Poptimists sleeper hit alert! Undistinguised video tho B Tzuke is a pretty lady. YouTube comments include debate about whether Freemasons are ACTUAL MASONS.

16. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - "Someone Grebt"

This is a single version in which a hipster has sex with A VOID omg. Does rather tilt the "is it about a break up OR DEATH" qn though.

15. GROOVE ARMADA ft MUTYA BUENA - "Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)"

Embedding disabled but who cares, it's a disappointingly boring video anyway.

14. KANYE WEST - "Stronger"

Kanye rebuilt by robotz!

13. BRITNEY SPEARS - "Get Naked (I Has A Plan)"

Not yet (& probably not ever) a single - here's an unofficial video.

12. LIL MAMA - "Lip Gloss"

Embedding disabled here too which is a great shame as this is an awesome video w/magic lipgloss!

11. FALL OUT BOY - "The Take Over, The Break's Over"

Even men with steel hearts love to see a dog in the emo video.

"The Take Over, The Break's Over" and "Someone Grebt" were 2 of my last cuts from the top 10 so I'm really happy to see they made it anyways. The only one here I haven't heard is the Freemasons one, I'll check it out.

So this basically sets what the top 10 presumably basically has to be. I wonder if there are any shockas awaiting though.

The 'takeover'/'arms race' divide is surprisingly strong, I think? People who love one seem very often to quite strongly dislike the other.

Well, we have 1xUmbrella, 1xAJ&Aly, 1xHannah Montana, 2xBritney, 1xRobin, 1x Avril, 1x Girls Aloud, 1xMIA, 1xSugababes, 1xLeona and 1xLCD (a song which, depending on how much [livejournal.com profile] poptimists have found their inner indie kid, won't be safe to discard until all the positions are filled), so plenty of that old Eurovision Factor!

PS Tom, please can we have individual reveals?

That's 12 songs you listed. My best guess is that Sugababes, Leona and LCD miss out, the other 9 make it and that "Call The Shots" makes it as well.

No Ciara or Trina.

Fucking LCD and Robyn instead.

I hate you all.

Huh this is the worst lot yet, 'Lip Gloss' and 'Get Naked' (OMG BRITNEY) are the only ones which really deserve to be here.

That surprises me as I really had you pegged as a Fall Out Boy fan.

I really hate all emo. I don't like in conceptually - boys whining about their 'problems' is never good! - but in practice I just can't get past the emo boy voice, which is even worse than most indie voices.

I'm curious as to what puts you off about the Freemasons. That they're uninvited?

(I originally had this in my Top 20 but decided that Bailey's voice didn't quite get in my door; excellent song, though, and excellent version; I'm sure I heard the Alanis original [I've heard her hits LP, and wasn't ignoring Top 40 during the Triumphal Alanis Era], but I hadn't recognized this as a cover; so I'm listening to this live clip of Alanis right now, f. orchestra.

I like the idea of a big club anthem about being uninvited. Creates word/sound cognitive dissonance similar to Tisdale's "Not Like That."

I don't dislike it but it's, like, only OK. I mean, it's one of those songs I heard when it appeared in the top 40, thought "yeah that's fine", ticked it, and never had the slightest desire to hear again.

Cor, several surprises here, mostly pleasant ones I guess (Kanye and Groovy Mutya both very average trax tho). I figured LCD must feature somewhere in the chart but I stopped following the DFA and all who sail in her almost exactly 2 years ago.

The one I hadn't heard:

LCD Soundsystem "Someone Great" - Gag, I really dislike the blah, pedantic vocals. Preferred the other two singles from the LCD alb, though not to the extent that I hope the high showing of this one foreshadows "All My Friends" in the top ten.

By the way, the surprising entry of "You" in the top 24 means four choices of mine have placed so far (still wouldn't be surprised if "You" scored on the basis of only two ballots); so I'm pretty sure that I'll get five in, with a possibility of six (although "See You Again"'s placing in the top seven, as I've predicted, probably depends on whether [livejournal.com profile] piratemoggy got her votes in).

Only 2 of my picks (Roisin and Feist) have turned up so far, but that's partly because I only submitted actual single releases - otherwise Britney would be in my top 10 for sure! This is entirely due to laziness on my part.

Tom - is it possible to generate something like a 'poptimist score' i.e. to what degree an individual's picks correlate with poptimist 'consensus'? I'm wondering if there's a statistical way of pointing up what feels like my detachment from poptimist taste over the last year! Of course if Spoon is in the Top 10 this may not be necessary...

Guilty as charged

Unrelated to this list but you can do that for the poptimists group on last.fm using this (http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/comparegroup.php).

Well, the one track off my Top 10 finally appeared! "Someone Great".

I love the video. It's as great as the classic New Order videos. More profound as you analyze the video, otherwise captivating without trying too hard. And best of all, excellent use of visual onomatapoiea.
