It's quite '80s-influenced and reminds me a bit of Miley Cyrus. I could do without the ~-QuiRk3E-~ delivery, but the "ay yay yay yay yay" chorus is very catchy, I think.
Oh, it's tremendously catchy, and will make my Top 30 at least, maybe higher, if I admit to just how catchy (but it's not as catchy as Miley's "GNO Girls Night Out," which is currently sitting at my number eleven)(and may go higher, if I admit etc.). But I am massively ambivalent about it anyway, since Ashlee had a great idea for a lyric and she botched it with vagueness. For a fuller expression of my ambivalence click here.
I am somewhat insane on this issue, since Autobiography is the deepest, most passionate, best album of the '00s (yes, even better than The Marshall Mathers LP, if not as funny)(go to Rolling Teenpop 2006 Thread and search "Ashlee" to see me rant and rave, to Rolling Teenpop 2007 Thread for more ravings, and to my Rules Of The Game #10 and #11 columns for extended lyrical analyses).
I do like this a lot, although the chorus grates on me slightly and it's not as good as the tango-y thing with the bloke from Gym Class Heroes that leaked awhile ago. On the other hand, it is fantastically pop.
Hmm, well, it sounds rather swarthy compared to Vince Clarke songs (which says a lot about how light and fluffy Clarke's songwriting is.. nothing wrong with that of course.) But it does sound like someone with a Toni Basil fascination hijacked Vince Clarke's studio and wrote a pop song on the fly.
I think I really like it with a couple of caveats (is this really the right sort of style for her v distinctive voice, mainly) which will be cleared up once a high quality version finds its way on to the internet, ie once I can hear the damn thing properly.
As I feared, this is getting no radio play, at least not so far. 9 spins on top 40 nationwide in six days, according to Mediabase.
The good news is that Miley Cyrus's "See You Again" (which as far as I know is not being promoted as a single and is getting no Radio Disney play and is by a performer who as far as I know never got any Top 40 play before this) is at 933 spins in the last week on Top 40; this is not a huge amount (compare to "Apologize"'s 11,035), but is more than Aly & A.J.'s "Potential Breakup Song" ever got on Top 40, and unlike PBUS, this has broken through in New York. Last I heard "See You Again" is running neck and neck with "Nobody's Perfect" in Miley/Hannah downloads on iTunes, again with no Disney play. So there's some kind of audience demand here, it would seem. (Also, it's a tremendous song.)
Those are U.S. numbers, by the way. "Outta My Head" could do better in Britain. The only chance this has in Murrica, I'm guessing, is if/when a video comes out it gets a lot of TRL action and heavy play on Launch Yahoo and AOL Music (and YouTube); the track probably is getting iTunes downloads, which may influence programmers a little. It may benefit from the declining importance of radio.
Would have done better if it had been billed as Timbaland f. Ashlee Simpson (not that it should have been other than to get airplay and downloads).
