The much delayed NOUGHTIES GROUP in the Pop Open. I'll be doing reveals for this on Friday and closing date for voting is Monday.

Tracks are available to stream here: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2007/11/the-pop-open-week-14/

In my humble opinion at least three of these are belters (I'm not saying which) so whether you are a louche pop open regular or a blushing poll virgin this is one to participate in. Remember you can't vote for any tracks you knew already!

[Poll #1092507]

Thanks to alexmacpherson, kill_yr_idols, piratemoggy and w3ft for these tunes.

I am lucky that no-one in the office asked me why I was laughing a Track 2, as I would have found it very difficult to explain.

Same for track 3, with 'raving' instead of 'laughing'.

Hahaha, oh dear, apparently in my brane I had changed the track I'd sent BUT NOT IN THE REAL WORLD.

1 - I'm a total sucker for those lovely close-up techno noises (thwip! krlp! mworp!), perhaps a minute too long though?
2 - BERLIMEY is she saying what I think she is? Very good but I think this is suffering from the old mp3-compression problem, as the bass doesn't seem loud enough - could just be my crappy work headphone tho.
3 - Starts off all Underworld-y, then pumps up the d-n-b to the max for the chorus. I bet this has a super-embarrassing guest vocalist like someone from Turin Brakes or something like that, put through the awesome-izer vocoder :)
4 - This totally reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it. It's the singer's intonation (and occasional lack of). OMG that's it, it reminds me of my first Pop World Cup entry for Spain! This has better lyrics though.

Ack! I won't be able to vote. (Well, I can vote, but I won't be able to listen to them until Tuesday. If it turns out I know two of them, I'll vote for the other two.)

I feel terrible for whoever provided Track Two. I love this song... but this song is everywhere now (so yes, I obviously heard it. If even I heard it, then it must be everywhere, lol.) Was this submitted well before the song hit the blogosphere like a tsunami? If the Noughties round had followed schedule, and this song was submitted months ago, I'd imagine the results would have been very different! O wot a huge difference a little time makes!

As for the three songs I don't know, I'm just going to provide keywords

One: midi, piano, 8bit, cute, ing-lish, european, novelty, pick, first
Three: wet, jungle, smooth, ooh, yeah, hmmm, ok, pick, second
Four: eh, hovers, odd, 00s, worshipping, 80s, all, the, time, why

Hmmm.

Well then, I'll just shut down the tear factory. :)

Track 1: There's an alternate universe in which Joe Strummer is smart enough to fire Bernie Rhodes and not Mick Jones, and therefore the Clash soldier on through 80s, until Mick meets Jazzy B and forms Big Audio Dynamite with him instead of Don Letts. This song comes from that universe.

Track 2: After one listen, this is clearly the standout track in the bunch, although honestly I can't imagine myself ever listening to it again.

Track 3: I wasn't sure if this track didn't make an impression on me, or I was just shellshocked from track two. It wasn't shellshock.

Track 4: I feel like this is an homage to album tracks from early 80s one-hit wonder new wave disco acts. Probably would've liked it more if there was a tune.

All of these are longer than they need to be, I think. Track 3 is the standout though. Track 1 probably just grabs second place.

Sadly I already knew Track 3, and am going to see the artist in question in London next week. I say "sadly" because I thought the others were all fairly weak. Given that this is the most current era to be covered, I was expecting a very high standard.

Track 3 rules though.
