My latest Pitchfork column is a big old review of the Britney album, in all but name. Thanks to the people reading this whose ideas I've drawn on!

Woo!

There is a Lil' Kim remix of 'Gimme More' which begins "It's Britney, bitch...AND LIL' KIM, HO!!!!" That sentence gives me such an immense amount of satisfaction. AND LIL' KIM, HO!!!!!

re GN(IHAP) it does the 'turning to the darkside' thing very well particularly because it doesn't throw up the 'i'm a bad girl/superfreak' cliche without demonstarting it convincingly in the music too (unlike that Lisa Maffia track which is great too but the 'bad girl' sentiment is far less potent there and she might as well be saying something else entirely). there's a great elegance about the whole thing at the same time. it's like a ghost train burlesque show without the tack, and instead of there being skeletons it's all just people in Eyes Wide Shut costumes, at it. ha ha.

Endless fun making up a video in your head to go with it yes...

I picture Danja as a disembodied head floating around Britney, all distorted like the Wizard Of Oz's big green head.

seeing how cheap the Gimme More video was i realised they'll never spend big money on a Britney vid again...unless it was just a cautious toe-dip because they thought Blackout would flop. oh ye have little faith. this album needs the biggest budget videos ever but it won't happen bah.

I'm not sure the problem with the GM vid was the budget - didn't Britney insist on choosing the director and take 'creative control' over it? I'm sure she could have done a much slicker video if she'd wanted.

That Laura Palmer metaphor is kind of perfect, it neatly encapsulates something I've been trying and failing to articulate about the album for some time.

yes well done on the twin peaks atmos spotting.

i am not a pop-happy bunny at the mo tho. i am not getting the enthusiasm for this album at all. i'm still liking the parts (sounds) more than the whole (songs).

there is enough in new GA to keep me happy, but not euphoric.

I have to say, Tom, this is some of the best kind of music writing - I'm pulling out the iPod now to listen again...
