They've reformed, they're touring, they're putting a new record out.

1. Do you care?
2. Were they ever pop?
3. If not why not?
4. What's yr favourite MBV song?

THE CHORD

1. yes
2. well kind of, almost like a particular extreme (not quite the right word) of what indie-pop could be with one particular knob* turned up to 11
3.
4. it's probably actually "soon" as a late doors loveless fan, rather than isn't anything, but seventeen minutes of You Made Me Realise age 17 was pretty mind-blowing (unlike the other blur fans i did not flee!)

*yes, yes insert kevin shields is a knob jokes here ;)

1. i do not really care altho i will listen to their new material and hope it interests me.
2. yes because my main memory of them is hearing Bruno Brookes introduce 'Swallow' on the top 40 show. And maybe a snippet of 'Soon' on The Chart Show. obv. they are none more nindie at the same time.
3. n/a
4. Weatherall remix of 'Soon' altho i love the original just as much i guess - not so fussed about ANY OTHER MBV

1. Yes, though I ph34r it will all be a bit of an anticlimax.
2. Yes, for the seven minutes of Soon at least.
4. Three way tie for You Made Me Realise, Soon and Come In Alone.

Yes, I'd see MBV play live. That'd be nice.

They are pop in as much as they wrote pop songs, but they weren't pop in the sense of charts and stuff. They are pop in my world.

My favorite MBV song is "Only Shallow," or maybe "Soon."

They had a top thirty hit in the UK with To Here Knows When. Which STILL seems weird, despite their huge popularity amongst most of my friends at the time.

1: all live music is evil
2: of course they are pop, here is what i listened to on my walkman while at wire: mbv, gnr, msp, hole, cocteaus, stones, beatles and i THINK THAT'S IT
3: n/a
4: it is all one mystic unending note to me

wrt 1) i DO care, but no i will not go to see them live. i didn't at the time. i have enjoyed EXTREEEEME music live in the past - a couple of stereolab gigs spring to mind. but i think that time where i'd pay for that and being in a crowd of other ppl are gone.

1. My ex-boyfriend at college was somewhat obsessed with them (to the extent of crate-digging for early demo rarities etc), I tend to associate 'Loveless' with being very very drunk and sh1tting myself about not being able to understand ANY of my degree.
2. Not sure - they seemed to make music for the joy of *making* it, rather than the joy of *listening* to it. But it was good to listen to as well. I dunno.
4. I don't know what they're CALLED, jebus :) Er I like track 1 off the first album a lot.

4 YES. it is an album called Loveless - there are no tracks.

i don't think i really do care. so many people i know love them, as do a lot of the techno dudes i love these days, and i haven't really given them a fair try - i have heard one of their albums on in the background once, i thought it was like enya but with guitars instead of vox, ie a bit worse but not unpleasant, but still dull. if i am in that sort of 'mood' these days i have burial to serve my purposes! i mean, i guess i vaguely want to see what the fuss is about, but not enough to actually do anything about it. i certainly don't care that they're reforming! no one should reform! why is everyone reforming these days? that sucks, and it sucks that people get excited about it.

From: [identity profile] nicolars.livejournal.com
Reforming is never a good idea. I can't think of anyone who has done this well.

1. No! I cared deeply up until about 1995!
2. Surely not.
3. Because Steve Wright will never play their singles.
4. Hmm. Actually, these days it's probably their cover of 'We have all the time in the world', and then 'Soon'.

"they're putting a new record out"
You don't seriously believe THAT one, do you?

1. Not really. If Debbie and Bilinda are both in the line up then maybe.
2. Yes of course.
3. -
4. "Feed Me With Your Kiss"! (or "Soon")

1. kind of, I hated them in a knee jerk way because it was my musical difference with the guy who got me into indie.
2. Yep.
4. No idea. Are they the original "there's always been a dance element to our music (and they were right!)"?

Also, does this mean that they've admitted that they they've shelved the "album" "they"'ve been "working" on for 15 years?

Date: 2007-11-15 04:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com
1. Yes, probably not as much as others here though
2. No, they were real 'pop that is trying to deny and obliterate its popness', so yes maybe. Or no. OH I DON'T KNOW.
3. See 2
4. Come In Alone or Only Shallow

1. As far as I can think of, there has NEVER EVER been an example of a band getting back together after ten years except in a sentimental sort of "I like Frank Sinatra's voice so whatever he wants to sing is fine with me" kind of way. So I could care less. That said, I will of course listen to the album when it comes out.

2. They seem pretty indie/rock to me, but I lack both the temporal and geographical context to say.

4. Wouldn't really single about a specific song (aside from "Drive It All Over Me," which is the only song not off Loveless that I listen to). I still love Loveless, though.

I'd actually have been very curious to have seen a gig from the Rocket From The Tombs reunion tour (though so far not curious enough to buy Rocket Redux, but I probably will eventually because among other things, as far as I know, there are no other versions of Crocus/David singing "Sonic Reducer").

1. Yes.

2. As much as Jimi Hendrix was, I think. Avant-pop I guess.

4. "Only Shallow" has super-polite drumming and what sounds like a guitar throwing up. Then it ends with some superplatonic hovering sound that really should be sampled by somebody, if it hasn't (and you don't need to be on any drugs to hear that).

1. No (but am obviously bothered enough to write this).
2. For a couple of seconds around Soon. On the other hand, there was nothing pop about the horrendous 1991 tour. People really were vomiting – it's no urban myth.
4. Drive It All Over Me/Slow/Thorn/(super-schmindie option: Lovely Sweet Darlene – amazing guitars! unspeakably bad vocals!)

1. Not really. I like their music, but reunions are bad news.
2. According to my own personal definition, yes. But probably not proper pop.
3. I don't know!
4. Soon, which is predictable but oh well...

I guess I wld go and see them if they gave up on their indie ho-hum and went full-on noize but post-wolf eyes etc i think they'll prob sound pretty puny

mission of burma have proved that reunions can work, and even the stooges were gd live - i can't stand the pixies, but think they've been v. wise not to attempt a studio alb

Had a brief look and this sounds like a reunion circus - will they actually release new material? That's pretty much all I'd be interested in.

Didn't they chart anyways? The answer to that will in turn give an objectivist ans as to whether its pop or not.

3. I do not care if they were or were not ever Pop.

4. You Made Me Realise

They are amazing, I have always loved them, and have tickets for 2 nights at The Roundhouse!
They are purely beyond pop! They are out there, and SO listenable. The did break the top 40 twice, so they are surely pop for certain!
Blown a Wish, and When You Wake (You're Still in a Dream, and I Only Said) fave songs-they are all brilliant though.
