...is a bit rub, but J. Trunk is an all round nice guy* and if this track means more people check out some Trunk records releases, the ends justifies the means I reckon.

*his delight in puerile smut is a bit odd, but in some ways it makes him even more endearing

Also surely you should be ticking for reasons of solidarity with a fellow-Resonance 104.4 FM broadcaster :)

I hate puerile smut more than anything. What on earth is this crap and why is it in the charts?

Answer to both: it is the shortest song ever to make the Top 40

Thinking about it some more, I doubt this will actually make many people buy a Trunk Records release. But I suppose it might finance the next release, which is a better reason still for its existence.

apparently Scott Mills has been playing it to death on his radio 1 show - 7 times in one day last week

Yes, but it's only charted in the top 40 since it the extra radio 1 exposure

OK this bit is seriously amazing and heart-rending:

TROY: What about us? What about everything we’ve been through?
GABRIELLA: What about trust?
TROY: You know I never wanted to hurt you.
GABRIELLA: What about me?
TROY: What am I supposed to do?
GABRIELLA: I gotta leave but I’ll miss you
TROY (ECHOING): ...miss you.

The other High School Musical song is good too, both a v pleasant surprise after the really over-saccharine one which charted a few months ago. Zac Efron...he is a dreamboat. I eagerly anticipate his slide into BOOZE & DRUGS HELL over the next five years.

The J-Lo is great too - it seems oddly retro! This kind of zinging, melodic pop r&b is pretty early-00s...the Christina Milian factor. Lovely fuzzy middle eight, melody shooting off at tangents in the verses, there is nothing bad about this song.

will.i.am is as endearingly retarded as ever and this Enrique ballad is BRILLIANT - the lyrics! "8th and Ocean Drive with all the vampires and their brides, we're all bloodless and blind and longing for a life beyond the silver moon" - who is he, Tom Waits?!

Shayne Ward is embarrassing...I dunno, I think I would be a lot more in favour of these songs if I hadn't seen them with the videos? Because his voice is OK, but the air of desperation is just so off-putting. Dude you are not Justin, you are not Usher, you are not Nelly, you are a total black hole of charisma. And to get away with a song like 'No U Hang Up' ie entirely based around the most annoying phrase one could possibly overhear ever, you really need to be VERY endearing. The other song is better, the cod-reggae one, but it's no 'Stars Are Blind' is it. But there's just so little imagination to the entire Shayne Ward project.

Katie Melua, if I was a sailboat I would sail far far away from you. "If I was in jail you would spring me" - no I bloody wouldn't, hearing that lyric coming from Melua's mouth is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

I ticked this because I liked the beat* on the track that was played on the Top 40 show yesterday (I don't know which one of the two it was, but I'm guessing "No U Hang Up" from yr description). The vocal performance was, as you say, underwhelming.

*Max Martin?

Both beats are OK I guess but nowhere near enough to merit ticks.

I thought the Ronson/Winehouse thing which is unaccountably pulling ahead of J-Lo was rather dull.

That's for If That's OK With You - the No U Hang Up is Yacoub/Birgisson/Kotecha. Those crazy Swedes.

Yes! Sorry, just wanted to agree with the bit of the Gabriella/Troy song that you singled out - that totally makes it for me.

I'm the only person who ticked Melua. The lyrics are ridiculous, I admit, but something about that song is oddly appealling to my ears, and I usually hate her with a burning passion.

Yes that bit is just so...OTT, in a brilliantly teenage way.

Is the Ronson thing a version of that one that the Futons did?

Date: 2007-10-01 11:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com
oops, Zutons obv. Which was already a version of something else, no?

Date: 2007-10-01 12:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ms-bracken.livejournal.com
I don't think so - all Zutons song sound a bit like cover versions.

Date: 2007-10-01 12:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com
yes it is the futons song. i'm not aware of it actually being something else, though obv it sounds like a million other things...

From: [identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com
I know why I'm confused - C and I heard this being played somewhere and both went 'oh, so the Zuton thing was a cover version' before we actually worked out that this was probably an ironic hipster reworking of what was already a tragically boring song. SHAME ON YOU POPTIMISTS!

the ronson version alBUM is GREAT (except R Williams doing "the only one i know"), i don't think it's "ironic hipster"...

the radiohead one's cracking, ditto apply some pressure, and the instrumental clodplay one.

winehouse and lallen both ok on it, but yeah, not a great song to start with.

The version of 'Toxic' is AWFUL - the entire project is to funk what Jamiroquai was to soul. Ronson is quite fit though.

obv 'ironic hipster' is snark! I have not heard enough to judge TBH.

futons = contraction of "fvcking zutons" obv ;)

The sudden influx of HSM songs is rather pleasing - if I was at school, or actually more pertinently if I was a STUDENT with acres of time to myself I would be v tempted to get into the whole thing properly, even if it is a bit off-puttingly saccharine. Did you check out the one Maura linked the other day? That one's BRILLIANT.

I have unticked the Ronson even though I think it is "any good at all". Enrique must win this week.

Shayne - I really like the silly voices on ITOWY, much better than Akon's Lonely. Good codding from Shayne. NUHU is soulless and uninteresting. ITOWY gets the tick as I would very much like to hear it again.

Ida vs Fedde - Good ingredients but somewhere in the baking process it's all gone a bit tricky. There's no structure! Electro like this really needs a coherent build-up & pay-off OR a proper pop song discreet verse-chorus thing. Borderline tick as it's a reasonable effort.

Mark & Amy - no improvement on the original. No tick.

Elvis - botherd

Jack Penate - not sure what he's trying to achieve here but whatever it is, it isn't tick-worthy.

Enrique - AWESOME and do you know what, it sounds even better in Spanish! Vampires and werewolves and brilliance. I'm going to write a thing about the album so won't go into too much detail here but TICK TICK TICK.

Katie - The song's a bit too sickly but she does have the sweet voice to pull it off. The video reminds me of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6sE1L2laCc) way too much.

HSM2 - not as good as What Time Is It. Botherd, rly.

JT&W - dear god this has got into the charts? I saw this as an interweb meme some weeks ago. POOR SHOW ALL ROUND.

30TM - RUBBISH epic emo. Must do better!

J-Lo - This is a great bit of pop, video to match. Also it samples 'KEEP ON TRUCKING'. Tick!

Will I Am - Hurrah this is grebt for all the reasons everyone else has said. Tickety-tick.

G+T - Awww I thought this was going to be a Fleetwood Mac adaptation :( It's alright I guess. OOOOOH actually when Troy finally shows up his bits work well with G's. Borderline tick.

The J-Lo video is insane, it's kind of like 'Dirrty' except with J-Lo being REALLY VIOLENT instead of sexxxy, and then...rescuing a small child at the end wtf!

Mark Ronson and her with the habit = all kinds of wrong. 'Valerie' is a great song, I truly believe it's one of the best songs in recent years. And Wino has a great voice. So why couldn't Ronson find a way to combine the two and do something the least bit interesting?

Will I Am gets my only tick.

i much prefer Broadcast's 'Valerie' (different song) but that's me!
