[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
This month's Pitchfork column. Written very quickly and drawing on some of last week's conversations on [livejournal.com profile] poptimists, this was going to be a much more involved column roaming into some wider places but i. I didn't have time and ii. The connections were rather forced. Actually I'm quite pleased with how it turned out! (Thanks to, IIRC, [livejournal.com profile] lockedintheatti for alerting me to the ad in the first place)

And not one mention of the King Kong Song! :)

I've only seen the advert once and was underwhelmed, tbh. I agree that the drum intro does transcend the 'oooh aren't we zany' aspect, but the whole business makes me feel uneasy for reasons I can't put my finger on.

I have a vat of far less coherent mumblings about nu-rave to post up later today. Tenderhooks, everyone!

Me as well - it is a good column and on the face of it convincing but I just can't get over the CHOCOLATE ADVERT thing, which is almost certainly due to ingrained anti-advert snobbery on my part.

(I haven't seen the ad yet)

There was a story linked from Idolator yesterday featuring Thurston Moore saying to fans complaining about the Sonic Youth / Starbucks deal something along the lines of 'get over it you sad tossers'. :-)

Love the last sentence! Hope you're right.

Arguably those Maxell ads with the misheard lyrics had a similar effect in the 80s - Desmond Dekker and The Skids benefited far more than Maxell did, I'll wager - but I can't think of another good example since then.

VOLVO!

Arthur russell?

having said that, THE SNAKE is on the new lambrini advert (which appears to be an attempt to start a hella-annoying dance craze (http://www.dothelambrini.co.uk/)) and kill this great song forever...

i saw it and thought "cuh, i can't believe they've got a stephin merritt impersonator in, how weird" and then like the next day [livejournal.com profile] maura pointed out it actually was actual stephin...

We watched the Cadbury ad in one of my advertising classes. Unbelieveably, a classmate did complain that "the song is about Phil Collins's divorce!!!" and thus poking fun at it was a violation of his artistic integrity. Seriously.

i always think of against all odds as the divorce one, but i guess it's kind of THE WHOLE ALBUM rly...

Quite excellent (in fact, I feel jealous, since for the second week in a row I'm out of focus on my own column). Your calling the ad a piece of music criticism hit like an unleashed gorilla.
