woo - i totally don't recognise the name Eric Carmen as the original - i assumed i'd know the name of the 70s original. i guess i was confusing it with "Nilson - Without You" (YES I KNOW that THAT is a cover)

Eric Carmen is the dude from the Raspberries, though I'm not sure how much success they and he had outside the US.
