If "about" means "listing three records and asking you to tell me about other ones"

Jungle Brothers - What U Waiting For?
Cookie Crew - Rok Da House
Missy Elliot - 4 My People.

GO ON THEN.

And does it/can it "work" other than as an occasional "wow this is good hey" palate-cleanser?

Mention Hip House and I'd always think of the Beatmasters straight away (seeing as they claim to have invented the term) - obviously that Cookie Crew track, but also 'Who's in the House' off the same album. And 'I'll House You' by the Jungle Brothers is even more obviously Hip House than the one you mention.

I bought Press Play today (£6 in Virgin Megastore plus 10% student discount, hurrah) and am VERY EXCITED by the whole thing.

King (and Queen) of all the microgenres!

stevem to thread obviously, but off top of my head:

"It Takes Two"
"What Time Is Love?"
Technotronic (anything)
Beats International - "Blame It On The Bassline"
Dizzee - "Oldskool" (Arf)

See also the greatest compilation of all time (http://www.discogs.com/release/173400)! (OK not all of this is hip-house as such, more one or t'other)

I think it works as a genre, and can listen to a lot of it in one go. But perhaps works best alternated with plenty of straight-up house music.

I bought it just last month via GEMM (always good for out of print CDs) - I can try and set up a sendspace if you're interested?

It's well worth it. It's worth the price for the Steinski track alone, but plenty of there gems on there too.

If you'd care to sendspace just the Gene & Jim track*, I'd certainly appreciate it (I only have this comp on cassette!)

*one of my favourites, and hard to find otherwise I think

Yes, that and the Steinski one are my two favourites, and they are also the two hardest to track down. It's quite a big file (11Mb). Enjoy!

There is a house-y song on the first Eminem album but I can't remember what it's called.

along with the jbeez tracks, de la soul, 'kicked out the house'

also, i would feel properly knowledgable if somewhere out there were a hip-house remix of 'saturdays', since it's almost there anyway.

'Sharon Phillips - Want 2 Need 2 (Trentemøller remix)'

/\ SO GOOD

the mshup of Fix's 'Dope Computer' and Tag Team's 'Whoomp There It Is' at the start of Ultramix 93 part 17 = best hip-house ever! i'm sorry it goes into Lenny Kravitz...

a good one from back in the day that's been forgotten about: Wendell Williams 'Everybody'

also Doug Lazy of course - his 'H.O.U.S.E.' sampled 'The Robots' very well

i had good fun last night putting Outhere Brothers first two #1 singles over proper techno tracks by Claude Young, Beltram and Richard Bartz (Ultramix 95 spoiler!)

2 In A Room also count - 'Wiggle It' obv. but also 'El Trago'

much more recently Masters At Work did 'Da Bump', but it's only OK...

it TOTALLY works as a genre-meld but then of course i would say that.
