Where are the women? Where are the non-guitar bands? Where is the pop? Where are the non-US/UK bands? Also there's not a single solo singer there. Last FM overall charts are consistently depressing, although the countries ones are handy for ticking off places it is and isn't safe to live in future.
In the list I only ticked 3, the ones I've ever bought albums by - Killers, Arcade Fire & Snow Patrol.
Wow! You're right. I didn't notice that. That's REALLY intriguing - I cannot think of any reason that might be (other than a lack of available candidates I guess - but WHY?)
There aren't many solo artists out there that AREN'T of the poppy heart-throb/pin-up type nor the 'alt-serious songwriter' type, the latter usually fail to become that big without being hott or marketed as such...i think? hmm...
there's clearly a larger fascination with the (male dominated natch) group dynamic tho. i find this annoying as i tend to prefer duos or acts which function with a key leading figure that ISN'T the vocalist.
the top solo artists: Avril Lavigne David Bowie Nelly Furtado Justin Timberlake Marilyn Manson Beck Björk Bob Dylan Johnny Cash Rihanna
curiously not one artist among these debuted in the 80s unless you include Bjork as part of a group.
I don't know, I think the bands in this list are just the most inoffensive ones, although by being such a lot of people (e.g. me) find them offensive! (or more repellant) They are also very white. Linkin Park, SOAD and Bloc Party are the least white and still are not exactly typical of black or asian music.
