My first "Poptimist" column for Pitchfork started with MacDermott's War Song, from 1878.

The theme song for "Freaky Trigger And The Lollards Of Pop" is Saltarello, which Dante Alighieri may have danced to (it wz written around his time anyway).

Sinatra is 100% fair game, in theory at least.

Good, because separate to any historical facts Sinatra sounds like pop to me. In fact, I reckon the sounds and construction of Umbrella have much more in common with Sinatra than, say, ABBA.

Not very much pop these days has anything to do with ABBA, sadly.

"L'homme armé" ("The Armed Man") should also be mentioned, this tune was such a huge hit as to be used as theme for a MYRIAD of 15th century Masses!
