A kung fu fighter in a disco

This is a much harder group than last week's. I think I know which two I'd vote for, but not in which order.

I would have been tempted for this one to submit something that sounds incredibly expensive, if I could think of such a track.

Most of it in this group! Three reggae (of nicely different styles though) plus one with ragga-style toasting, plus one which has nothing to do with reggae.

Are there many reggaephobes on Poptimists I wonder?

At least there's safety in numbers, if everybody else hates reggae we're all screwed!

Haha I would probably have submitted reggae too - Lady Saw's 'If I Were A Rich Girl' (samples Fiddler On The Roof in the same way as Stefani did, Saw did it first though).

No one seriously hates reggae though do they.

I dunno how many people hate it but I think there's probably quite a few people who like it occasionally!

It's a v safe choice because it's not a sound which would turn anyone off immediately (which could be the case for nearly every other genre I can think of) but it's also not a genre which many people on Poptimists really delve into very deeply

What exactly happens if my group doesn't ever fill up? Do I get an automatic bye into the next round?

Since AFAIK I know both the people in your group who haven't submitted I can and will harrass them in the pub!

If one of the non-Death groups gets to 4 and the 5th pulled out I would join it myself and ditch my Death song, thus evening up the numbers in Death.

I'd have been very tempted to submit "Money" by Yes (Rick Wakeman does Denis Healey impersonation, cue much kvetching about Old Labour's top rate of tax and rudeness about Healey's sexual inadequacy. I am not making this up!)

I think you're underestimating potential anti-reggaeness Lex! Certainly before I actually got into reggae (which was really pretty late), I found the perceived same-ness of it really offputting. It's not as dangerous as country or metal but I don't think it's a safe option by any means.

I might have submitted "Money" by the Ragga Twins, which isn't reggae but the word is kind of similar.

Lots of reggae has strong enough melodies to overcome the sameyness thing though, and often v funny lyrics - and also in isolation the sameyness isn't really a factor anyway. It's not airtight obv but I can't think of any other genre which would be safer.
